Your post is a fine example of weak-tight thinking.
I've played in many games where it wasn't at all uncommon to go 6 bets on the turn and another 8 on the river, with neither party having the nuts. If the opponent is a rock, he can safely stop earlier, but if his opponent is a gambler, he should be prepared to play a very large pot.

I once raised 55 preflop and the flop was 5-Q-A with two clubs. Lot's of 3 way action on the flop. Turn was another club. Lot's of 3-way action with the third party dropping out at the 3rd bet and me not capping the third bet but calling (chicken me!). River was a 5! I hover over the raise button to get in the auto click mode. Click, click, click, ???? - button vanishes!!!
I forgot to monitor my stack! I just could get 3.5 bets in and was down to 0! Villain had the nut full house and thought I had the nut flush! He had 25 BB left. Me: Damn! Him: You could have become rich here!
