I think you are assuming you're behind here (which is often times a costly mistake).

To summarize the protection concept: Protecting your hands puts your opponents in a lose-lose situation. When they fold to your bet, you gain the percentage of the pot corresponding to the chance they make their draw. When the call your bet without odds to do so, they contribute dead money to a pot that's yours most of the time.

When it's checked to you on the turn, you are still probably betting for value. Even though the turn is a scare card, don't always assume the worst (especially against two opponents). If you are behind, you have 4 outs to best, 3 outs to chop, and 1 more likely out to chop. By betting, you get some "fold equity" when you're behind, and weaker hands giving you money when they call.
