Additionally, US federal laws barred the placing of bets across state lines by electronic means, preventing Antiguan online gambling companies from accessing US customers.

Does this mean that I am violating federal law by playing online poker?

Probably. Of course, you're violating the law in a number of US states any time you have oral sex. The US is full of dumbass laws that everybody breaks.

Yes. However, the Justice Department does not prosecute individual players.

Because it IS all about $, that would normally be an automatic for the current administration. Except now that no American companies are involved due to the undefined US policy which has kept US based casinos off the internet - there is much less incentive. Further, a ban it could be a would be a nice bone for Bush to throw to the holier than Jesus crowd that makes up his base.

However, the one thing that poker players have going for us is that the aforementioned religious right is nothing, if not, hyprocritical. And they, like virtues guru Bill Bennett, love to gamble as much as anyone.

Conclusion: I think there is a greater chance of the rapture occurring before poker is banned and made illegal. And if that happens, it will likely be too hot to play anyways.

I just dont see it happening. There's billions in the online business and money is a very powerful ally against a law against gambling.

The worst thing for party poker's profits would be a clear cut acceptence of the legality of online poker in the US
grey area = virtual monoploy (no pun intended)

I've spoken with Linda Johnson about this, and she said that Party is spending a substantial amount on lobbyists in Washington.

This is questionable. According to the Financial Times (a london newspaper), partypoker wants to do an IPO, sell stock, and the owners would make enormous amounts of money if they could do so. What's holding them back is the questionable legal status of online gambling in the US, since most of partypoker's players are american.

I was going to say basically what you said. If they dont get this legal and the American government actually cracks down on illegal gambling, Party loses billions in the long term. It's in their best interest.

The IPO's what, like 3.5 billion?
