Congrats on the nice deal, Greenage.

I am a computer science grad student...making a hand converter would not be too dificult, however it would be somewhat time consuming and Im not sure if I would have time to write one right away, but I could probably do this eventually if you all wanted me too.

As far as copywright is concerened, theres nothing the company could do if the new converter was written with original code I would guess.

This is correct - if the new author does not use any of the original source code then there will be no issue. It is not like the whole idea of the hand converter can be protected - in fact one existed prior to Greenages. Unfortunately it stopped working for stud.
