when comparing two teams starting pichers its common practice, although perhaps not widely recognized as such, to exclude those players who aren't starting pitchers, such as a team's closer, from the comparison.

nah, its more fun to needle yankees fans that it is to argue over which massive overspender got less return for their buck in various departments.

i dont think its fair to group the sox in with the NYY in terms of money spent. the NYY are on a totally different level than even the sox. for example:

the NYY have a payroll 85 million more than the sox, whilst the sox can fit into the second tier (123-90) along with 5 other teams. the ramirez contract is what puts boston over 110m and that is the result of the previous regime.
