IANAImmigrationL, but, i don't think this is accurate. First of all, millions of Americans have dual citizenship. So becoming a citizen of another country is NOT even close to the same thing as renouncing your US citizenship. Maybe that is what you meant, but I wanted to clarify that becoming a citizen does not mean you lose your US citizenship.

Also, millions of Americans reside abroad, and they do file tax returns. WE had a thread a while back that concluded that Americans abroad have to pay taxes on gambling winnings even though they, for the most part, do not have to pay US taxes on salaries etc. (the first 80K if you are abroad X number of days of the year).

why not live on the outskirts of a resort that has wide open gambling and lots of rich tourists ? Sounds like more fun than sitting in a dingy hut with a laptop and a better chance to make money. Don't forget the free drinks and women either.

I will be leaving the UK in a few months to do just this. My current favourites are Buenos Aires or Australia. Having lived in Australia for 6 months previously, this would be an ideal country from where to play online.

Remeber though there are Visa issues, however if you are under 30 you will be able to get a 12 month holiday visa to stay in Oz. Worth considering.

if you earn more than $24000 a year playing poker you should be paying tax. i wont make you but watch out for revenue canada if they come

Your idea of moving to a low-cost place and playing from there, is a nice theoretical stone thrown into that lake of ignorance.

If you're serious about this, consider moving to St. Croix. I was there recently on a vacation, and the game there is the worst I've ever seen. There's just one casino - and the poker tables are frequented by the same group of 50-60 locals every night. The only game they spread is 5-10, but 8-9 people on average see each flop (the post-flop play is even worse). I played for 10 straight nights, and was absolutely amazed by what I saw. They make the Party 5-10 players look like Phil Ivey. There's also a weekly 100/10 NL tournament every Sunday, which attracts the same 50-60 locals every week. They are TERRIBLE.

Obvious benefits of playing down there are that live play must be more fun than online play, the cost of living is low even by caribbean standards if you dont live beachfront, the online hookups are just like here so you can play online too, and its still the US (basically) in terms of safety, etc.
