It was standard practice in my school. I don't think I got called by my first name by anyone for the first 3 years, and even after taht it was close pals.

English public school (== private school), just so you know (on scholarship).

I'm surprised someone hasn't said it is disrespectful because this isn't the first time I heard someone bitch about it.

I really want to understand why some people consider it disrespectful when it seems like such a common practice.

That is true. I don't think I've ever called a woman at my work (I use work since this is mainly where I use peoples last name) by their last name. The same goes with bosses, I'd never dream of doing that.

It all depends on the tone...

For sure. I have lots of close friends who call me by my last name and love it. Then I have met other people who I can't stand calling me by it. There is definitely a difference in the tone.

Guys calling other guys by there last name is no problem, and if they say it is then call them by there first name, but just Fucin call them by the wrong name... Thats DIsrespect.

As for a girl calling a guy by there last name... ummm its just akward.. its more of a "were only at best can be friends title"

In high school we used to joke with new people that we'd call them by their first name until we got to know them better and were on a last name basis.

Which is appropriate for work and for 99% plus of the women you'll ever meet if you lived 1000 years.

I am pretty much only called by last name. More than half of my friends at one point thought it was actually my first name.
