[ QUOTE ]
There was a guy from LA - a movie producer or something by the name of David (aka DD). He would come into our games now and then and would often tip the whole pot. We had wild 'n crazy 10-20 kill games with $800 pots occurring quite frequently. He would be rooting like hell for a club or whatever he needed to make his flush. He would be yelling to the dealer "put a club out there, sweetheart and the pot is yours". Boom - off comes the 3c and down goes $800 into the dealer's toke box. The dude was nuts. [/ QUOTE ] that's cool as hell. |

the first time I ever played live last Feb. was at the palms. I won a huge (HUGE) pot playing 4-8 with a straight flush against the nut flush plus the $599 high hand jackpot. I was scared because I was only 18 and thought I might get carded so I didn't even think about tipping the dealer. a few hands later she dealt me quad fives. won another huge pot plus a $333 high hand jackpot. so that was about $1500 this dealer gave me in about 15 minutes, so I tipped her $100. that was the biggest tip I have ever given.
I've seen other people tip $200 and $300 if they win bad beat jackpots, but nothing too exciting. |

[ QUOTE ]
I was playing 10/20 at the borg one night. There were about 4-5 dealers from other casinos at the table having a good time with each other and the dealer. They were tipping the dealer 25-50 bucks after every mid to large size pot and I saw one tip of over $100. The game was wicked good with 5-7 minimum to every flop, but I got a table change as soon as possible. They were taking way to much money off the table each orbit. 45 minutes after they all sat down, the table broke from everyone going to (or near) the felt. [/ QUOTE ] why would you not wait until they went broke to get your table change? +ev for a limited time is still +ev. |

why would you not wait until they went broke to get your table change? +ev for a limited time is still +ev. [/ QUOTE ] After 2 orbits of seeing $200+ disappear into the toke tube, I figured that if I did stay and got cold cards for a period or got a few suckouts against me it was very -EV. Money on the table that I can win is +EV. Money that is dropped in the tube not to be won is -EV. Besides, the 10/20 game at the borg is usually so fishy anyway, what ever table I was at was +EV |

[/ QUOTE ] you have a disturbingly bad intuition for ev. you will run good just as often as you run bad, and win much more when running good than you will lose when running bad at that table as compared to a normal table. |

I would much rather play at a table with 4 fish were I have the ability to win every $$ there than I would to play at a table with 7 fish and have upwards of 10% of the total table's stacks disappear every orbit. One has the potential for profit (+EV) while the other has an almost guarantee of loss (-EV). As I weighted my options, I decided that it was better for me personally to change tables. If you would have sat in a sinking ship game fine, but I would much rather find greener pastures.

this logic only works if you were tipping as extravagantly as they were. assuming you were tipping the same amount there as at another table, i will quote myself: "you have a fundamental misunderstanding of why good players make money from poker."

My goal has always been to make the most money over the long term. I would agree with your earlier assertion if there were no other games or if the other games were not soft, but as long as I had other +EV options, I would make the same choice over again.
Money in the toke tube: chance of winning 0.00% Money on the table: chance of winning > 0.00% So I missed out on some short term variance (+ or -) to assure myself of a long term +EV situation. I don't mind so why do you? |

Caught a bad-beat jackpot when I was 20. Won $6,300.00 and tipped 10% so that's $600.00.
It's the biggest tip I've seen and the biggest tip I've given. On a side note, I realized how big an idiot I was for giving a $600.00 shortly thereafter. Still the Ace on the River was nice to complet my Ace's full of Queens to his 4 lady's. |
