The books that have helped me the most are Small Stakes Hold 'em and theory of poker. If you are having trouble with EV, I very strongly reccomend that you read "Getting The Best of It" by Sklansky. It is great on gambling theory, and life theory. Keep playing, poker is about cards, but it is also about people. Good luck!

When you finish those, there are many other good books to read: Hellmuth's Play Poker Like the Pro's

You are kidding. You've got to be.

I own PPLTP and it is total trash

[/ QUOTE ]

Yup. PPLTP is awful. His advice is terrible when applied to a low-limit game.

Yup. PPLTP is awful. His advice is terrible when applied to ANY game.

FYP

Kriger is fairly lousy also.

Jones and then Miller is better advice.

With Miller's new beginners' book I will likely agree that Miller and then Miller is going to be the best advice.

Just read Ed Miller GSIH and SSHE and you should be fine. But Jones will provide some help along the way too.

As someone who has been in your shoes and is progressing at a nice pace I would second everything in Jeffage's message. Repetition of every step from reading to playing to analyzing is important. I have read and re-read Jones and Miller. Someone mentioned how important it is to fold, again that can't be emphasized enough - a great book that helped impress that upon me is Zen and the Art of Poker by Larry Phillips. Keep at it...

There are quite a few good books out there. Many of these have already been stated but here's a good list:

Winning Low Limit Hold'em by Lee Jones - Very beginner type book

Getting Started in Hold'em by Ed Miller - Haven't read this one but it too seems like a beginner book

Small Stakes Hold'em by Miller, Sklansky, & Malmuth - Amazing book, a must buy once you have the basics down (see above books)

Harrington on Hold'em by Dan Harrington - A great NL tournament book

Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players by David Sklansky - Title says it all, applies to slightly higher limits than SSHE or against stronger competition

Theory of Poker by David Sklansky - An advanced book that introduces many concepts which apply to all types of poker

Caro's Book of Poker Tells by Mike Caro - Great B&M book

He dumbed it down perfectly. It is an excellent book for beginners.

Agreed. A Hellmuth book was the first poker book that I bought because it was cheap. I read the entire thing in about 2 hours, and didn't feel like I learned anything at all.

Don't listen to these schooly nerds.

Screw books, I never learned anything from a poker book besides Doyle Brunson likes to race greyhounds.

Never lose money in a poker game without learning something from the experince. Think about your session and what you did wrong and how you could play better next time. mmmmkay?

No no no. Without understanding why, you're going to spend a lot of time and money figuring out that 32s is not worth a cold call and the like. Take advantage of the experience of other people. The cost of a book or two is so much less than reinventing the wheel from scratch in the card room.

FWIW, my progression was WLLHE (Jones), SSH (Miller), TOP (Sklansky), HEFAP (Sklansky).
