That's one possibility. Another is that the winner of the last game rolls to go first. This method is common is Greece. It increases the value of the win (relative to a gammon) if it isn't the last game.

Another method is that the player who rolled the higher die either plays both dice or rerolls. Unless the initial roll is 6-1 or better, it is better to reroll to get a chance to roll doubles.

I'd have to say this is the most common scenario. I used to see it all the time, everywhere.

3-1 is clearly the best opening. 4-2 is second, with 6-1 third. We should play a little backgammon next time i get down to la.
