I realize you don't like the earbud style, but don't judge them all by the crappy ones included with the Ipod. Take a look at these. They fit inside the ear like ear plugs, don't aggrevate your ear canal and don't fall out. On top of that they provide much better sound than most other styles. You can get really fancy ones from other makers, but these Sony ones work well for me, and cost about $35 shipped. The model is MDR-EX71.

How much better are these than the ipod standard ones? Do you notice a better bass?

I have a MP3 player from Creative, which has pretty much the same earphones as the Ipod. I noticed a big improvement in overall sound with the Sony plugs. The bass and mid range is much better, but the biggest difference is that they fit way deep in your ear canal compared to the standard ones so all the sound is directed at your ear.

You're right. The Shure ones are outstanding. I just can't justify spending hundreds of dollars for ear buds that I carry with me all the time. The cords snap too easily.

I've heard decent things about the Sony's, but if you want cheap earbuds, I'd rather go with the Sharp MD-33s.

I have the e2c earbuds, and Grado SR-125s myself.

actually shures are pretty damn good, until you consider...

i would say theyre easily the best portable headphone in the world. but many find the 900 dollar price tag a bit steep. you can have custom earmolds made for super comfort too.
