Re: Negative EV Play
Since I wasn't there I can't weigh the likelihood of them tying Greg up or something....but since originally posting about this situation I have since decided that Greg probably did the right thing.
Either way, he only had a couple seconds to decide anyway and my opinion on the matter doesn't mean a whole lot anyway. But, I am reminded of the fact that this wasn't just a 'normal' robbery type situation. These guys knew who Greg was certainly....and Greg has already indicated that he saw their faces and they knew this. In Venezuela, some pricks kidnapped the mother of major-league baseball pitcher Ugueth Urbina (of the Detroit tigers) in Sept. The reason they kidnapped his mom was because they knew that Urbina, as a major-league pitcher, has a high enough salary to pay a lofty ransom. I think Urbina makes $3-mil/yr or so. Evidently, it's a very real concern with the families of top baseball and soccer players in VZ (and I think also families of top soccer players in Columbia as well). I don't know what happened with the Urbina situation...but I can very easily see some dopey robbers somehow setting a high ransom for Raymer's millions...and, to that end, SERIOUSLY putting Raymer's life in jeopardy. Good job Greg...and, again, I'm glad everything turned out well. |

Re: Greg Raymer\'s incident makes front page of Yahoo
greg, like the majority of non-idiot-pricks on this forum, i'm very happy to hear it turned out the way it did.
one question: i've read that at least one of the jackasses that tried to rob/kidnap you was a poker player. one thing i havent read is whether you had ever seen the guy before. any chance you took him for his stack earlier in the night? |

Nope. I did not recognize either of these a-holes prior to the attempt.

seriously speaking, dude you're kind of a celebrity now having won 5 mill on tv and all.
And i'm not saying you're not cautious or paying enough attention or whatever; but maybe you should at least consider some celeb-type precautions (i dunno...private coming & going out of places, escort/bodyguards, etc) vs lunatics & who knows...maybe the occasional stalker-groupie; a la britney's japanese business man? [ QUOTE ]
By the time they showed me the gun, they had already attacked me and tried to force me into my room. [/ QUOTE ] Given this important fact, the chances that you did the right thing by fighting them off increases tremendously. |

Um the Bellagio isnt Venezuela. In venezuela he made the right move...In Vegas a horrible one. It is his life and safety not really my business but kidnapping and ransoming is WAY more prevalent in Latin America then here. |

Never, ever go to a secondary location with a would be kidnapper. If they just whipped out the gun and demanded money, yeah, give it to them. However, these guys wanted to take Greg somewhere secluded. In that case they likely had something more sinister planned. Luckily Greg had the ability to resist and fight them off. This was the correct decision, even if you look at it in hindsight with more than a 1/2 second to analyze it. Never, ever go to a secondary location with a would be kidnapper. The outcome will be as bad or worse as if you refuse and try to get away. |

Re: Negative EV Play
Greg,
To be able to think and react quickly and correctly in such a hairy situation is highly commendable in my book. I'm very glad everything went alright for you. |
