Gang drug war violence is the same as terrorism.

No. Gang drug war violence is directed at each other. Terrorism is directed at innocent non-combatants.

And it is right to instill fear

I believe this point was central to Lenin's philosophy.

And although we should not allow permanent curbs on our liberties to fight same, we can and should be willing to submit to occasional such measures for limited periods.

ROFLMAO. When does government *ever* give up power. Simple case in point. The income tax was designed to be a temporary tax of no more than 3% designed to raise funds for a specific purpose. To quote Tony Soprano "You can't put sh*t back in a donkey."

Yea, tough luck for all the innocent 3rd parties and law enfocement officers and witnesses who get killed as a result. I'm sure it's very comforting to their families to know it's not really a form of terrorism according to some.

Neither gang activity nor terrorism is an excuse to impinge upon liberty. As Harry Browne said after 9/11, the best way to make sure we catch and punish the right people is the same for terrorism as any other crime. Give those accused all the protections of our constitution.

Yea, it sure is nice isn't it, to be white and living in a safe area of a smaller city instead of in a bad hood in a large city where you hear more gunfire at night than in Baghdad, and where the residents probably don't make the distinctions you do regarding gang bangers and terrorists.

WTF are you talking about? Do you live in one of these neighborhoods? Where do you live? Do you know what distinctions the residents do and don't make? Did you even look up the crime rates of New Haven compared to these cities that you think are so much worse? Why does the color of my skin matter?

Hypothetically, if the government wanted to control us and instill laws and programs that invade our privacy in a 1984 fashion, wouldn't the best way to do it be to terrify with a horrible, impending threat that they "need" the government for, and then institute programs that the citizens are too terrified to think about and readily accept?

Hypothetically.
