Um, Pat... he had a good deal of FE, the problem with this play is that it doesn't work often enough for the risk/reward to payoff. Perhaps you are overlooking a digit. He moved in for over 1mil into a 100K pot. It isn't the worst play in the world, but the Risk/Reward doesn't compute. -EV by several hundred thousand chips.

Oops, just glanced at it and missed that it was an extra digit raise. I figured if it was posted that it had to be a 60k reraise.

What is so bizarre about this. I guess its a bit much to risk, but not completely out of line I'd think. A lot depends on how the match had been going on. HU is all about flow/feel etc.... Looking at one hand doesnt mean too much to me.

If the 78 guy wanted to reraise he'd probably make it something between 250-400k which is a good chunk of his stack so I really don't think his raise is terrible. If he felt uncomfortable HU or felt like his opponent was very strong, I'd think this type of play would become almost default.

I used to play a lot of $10 heads-up freezeouts on Pacific, and as you can guess, the competition was universally awful. Against those who tried to play 'correctly', I'd usually have at least half their stack by the end of the second level without ever risking much of my own. Once we got into push/fold mode, I'd win a little better than 75% of the time (since I had 75% of the chips).

The most difficult players to play were the ones who started going all-in from the first hand. My win rate against them was better than 50%, of course, but it probably wasn't as high as 75%. They'd be moving in for 800 into a pot of 30, and I'd be throwing away waiting for a hand I could call with, but sometimes that wouldnt' come until I'd lost 1/4 of my chips, and then even if my hand held up Villain would still have 10BB's left and could go back to push-stealing.

In other words, when you're heads up and badly outclassed, the overbet all in may actually be the 'optimal' strategy for you, in that it is least -EV.

He didn't have pot odds to call with the suited connector. I guess he must have wanted to take a disadvantagous gamble because he thought the other guy was outplayig him. Doyle Brunson discusses this approach in his section on tournament play in SS2. He talks about how Jesus Ferguson repeatedly went allin to negate TJ Cloutier's skill advantage heads up at the WSOP.
