If this is happening often enough to be an issue, or you don't understand why small chips make good games, you've come to the right place. Starting with an archive search for Ed Miller posts (here) is a good idea.

when i first started dealing at my casino we had a $3 rake and the house thought it would be a good idea to have no cash value $3 chips to make the rake "easier" for the dealers.

this was such a bad idea because the racks would get full of whites in less than 30 minutes since the racks were impressed at $500 which was completly unneceesary and counting the rack everytime i got up was such a hassle.

the casino got wise to the fact they were losing money and started using the removable plastic racks which were set at $300 and we could start putting our tokes in there and keep the extra at the end of the night.

moral of the story: i hate $3 chips.

I'm sure for someone who's used to it they can do it in a flash, but trust me, if you get a bunch of people who aren't used to it, we're going to be holding up your game until we get better at it. This is more than offset by the fact that the dealer isn't constantly making change. If you play with red and white in a 6/12 game, the dealer will be making change for for several players on every street of every hand.

Once you say raise or call, the action can immediately proceed, even if your chips aren't quite out there yet.

Ah yes, I underestimate how easily some players can be enchanted by a mountain of chips in the middle of the table, regardless of their denomination.

well, i played at the Wynn this past thursday at the 1/3NL and I can assure you the $3 chips are an absolute nightmare. i understand your issue with them completely. no one could get used to them. If you were playing there I was the guy saying... "raise... uh, whatever that is right there." and stacking up about 8 - 20chips. the other observation is made is that nearly all the time raises were smaller denominations than at typical $5 chip tables. it made for smaller stakes unfortunately.

i asked each dealer when they got used to the $3 chips and the answer was the same. "never".

aside from that the wynn is excellent.

It is not a coincidence that the 8/16 game at the Bellagio and the 6/12 at the Mirage are two of the rockiest low stakes games in Vegas.

As far as excal goes 1-3, 2-6 and $100 max NL are the only games i've ever seen run there.
