Agreed, money should stay on the table unless a player cashes out everything. Some home games let a big stack sell some of his chips when someone new buys in, which I do not think is unreasonable in a friendly game. But ratholing such as the OP described should never be allowed as it kills the game and is just generally retarded.

In terms of selling off the big stack's chips, I think this should only be permitted when there is no other way for the buying player to obtain new chips. We used to use beer caps for $5 chips in our $20 buy-in game.

it's a home game, so there are all kinds of rules.

standard though, and what i consider best is:

you can leave at any time, but if you leave, you leave. no taking money off the table. no coming back with less. table stakes, baby.

[/ QUOTE ]

Hmmm...

A few times at a home game I've taken taken a walk and rebought with 400 (1/2 blinds, normal buy in is 200, but there's no real max buy-in) after leaving with 850.

I took maybe a half hour to an hour to go grab a coffee, etc.

My major weakness is that I'm too aggressive, and having a 150-200xbb stack seems about perfect for me, but a 400xbb stack is way too deadly.

Am I way out-of-line, here?

I thought the rule in casinos was that you had to wait 1 hour before buying in for less.

But yeah, as to OP's OP, I wouldn't let that fly.

(At Casino Niagara, if you voluntarily take a table-change, you can only buy into the new table for max buy, this doesn't apply in must-move situations).

In a friendly game we use a rule that someone can cash out for their buy in when someone else buys in.

in our home cash games we have rules set up so this way these situations wont happen, you must call cashout 1 hour before u plan on leaving. its fine if you fold every single hand as long as you call it before. Also you are not allowed to take any chips off the table unless you are at 3.5x what the largest buyin was for. and then and only then can you take off JUST what you bought in for. so if you get up to 65 in your 20 game, it would be ok to cashout 20 so your only playing with your profit. However you cant take anyone else's money off the table. This way if a fishy somehow gets a huge stack they cant take any of your money off the table like what happened in your story and you still have an hour to get it back.

just some rules we have so no problems arise

If I'm playing a cash game and I'm sleepy or just tired of playing, I'm not going to wait an additional hout until I leave...that defeat's the purpose of it being a cash game.

I understand that this allows for some unethical situations but I promote the cash game as having the benefit of coming and going as you please.

Isn't this just results-oriented thinking writ large? Surely it's a good idea to let a player run home with a big score if that's what he wants to do. He will most likely convince himself that this result was down to his great skill and will continue to participate in your game as a -EV player.

Whether you're out of line flat out depends on the home game.

At our game we strictly enforce table stakes as an essential part of poker. If you're leaving for any reason but suspect you may be back, you generally leave your chips on the table. (we all live close enough that you could just stop in for 2 minutes to change them for cash if you're not going to return to play)

Maybe it's because of our strict table stakes rulings, but the suggestion of ratholing makes our players pretty upset. They get all uppity about how it's their money they can't win anymore, etc. etc., and that reinforces the strictness of table stakes. Anyways whatever the game rules are, go with them, but establish them BEFOREHAND please.

This would not be aloud in the home games I play in. We have a strict rule that you must call a cash out at least a half hour in advance if you want out. This prevents people from winning one big hand and getting up and leaving with all the cash. If you lose a big hand you will at least have half hour to try and win some back. As for cashing out some but not all chips....ridiculous! Would never happen in our games. Its all or nothing.
