I'm in the category of guys who get annoyed by very long hair, but it seems I'm in the minority.
I'm not sure if everyone gets that you're talking about hair that's longer than a woman's normal hair, and not just hair that's long--i.e. shoulder length. Incidentally, I'm male with long (little past the shoulders), messy hair, and it looks horrible, but I enjoy it.

Personally I like it waxed or clean shaven. Trimming the little patch above is OK, as long as it's neat and tidy. If it's long enough, then please braid it and pull it aside so it's not in the way.
