There's definitely an argument for reraising and taking it down preflop. (More so if the cutoff is very aggressive and thinks you may be re-stealing.)
Of course if you try that and he calls you definitely won't be getting away from this hand after flopping a set (but it will make your decision easier). But in the end, there's really nothing you can do. He's going to get your money since you have a monster, and he can probably tell that by your betting (otherwise he wouldn't pot the river), and he has a bigger one. C'est la vie.
