Oh man, you played their -EV game! Damn, they're probably going to ban you now. Keep up the good work and keep us posted on any future BJ winnings or Party apparel.

well, i realize that blackjack against the house is a negative EV game because they shuffle too often or continuously, and they make the rules so you cannot possibly win long term at least without bonuses.

That being said, i just saw something that BetWWTS is doing, and perhaps some more sites will start with , tournament blackjack. If that can be set up to allow for single deck games, playing player versus player, it becomes a real game of skill!

Should be a great game for some of the really good BJ players, and probably lead to some more programs designed to play against the humans, but even then, it would be determined by skill of the programmer.

Perhaps this will get Party to change their game, lololol.

there is definite skill to tournament blackjack...and it's not just about counting-cards or anything.
In fact, that's not going to help you out much (if at all).

But by sizing one's bets properly and making correct strategy adjustments (perhaps needing to double-down on a hard-14 or something weird like that..when that is your only chance of advancing to the next round) then tournament BJ can definitely be a +EV game for the knowledgeable player.

Stanford Wong wrote a book on casino-tournament strategy that is supposed to be quite good (BJ tourney, Craps tourney, 3-card poker tourney, etc etc).
Wong is one of the foremost experts in BJ card-counting and most of his books were rated 9's or 10's by none-other than Mason.
before poker, I was on his website (BJ21.com) a lot which is pretty much the "2+2" equivilent of BJ card-counting.

I will very seriously consider checking out this site with BJ tournaments (and tracking down that Stanford Wong book).
Very different strategy from poker tournaments and sometimes lots of fun.

Please let me know if you locate that book. I don't see how you can make different sized bets, however. If you are playing head up, or in a tourney, don't you have to get the bet covered?

the BetWWTS was talking about head up tourneys. Perhaps there are other types. It sounds like you know quite a bit about it. I quit playing one dollar single deck blackjack (badly I must admit) about the time I found poker. However, this is going to be something I will try, for sure!

You dont play tournament bj against the other players like you do in poker. You play against the dealer still. The only thing your doing against the other player is trying to get more chips than him in a certian ammount of rounds.

Hes saying you may have to double on a hard 14 because you opponent may have already won a bet on the last round that would make it impossible for you to catch him if you didnt double your bet. You may even have to double on 19 in some cases just to get more money out on the table and hope for a miracle.

I'm sure you could order the Casino Tournament Strategy book by Stanford Wong via BJ21.com.

They might have it at conjelco or even here at 2+2 for all I know.

I've seen it at Borders and Barnes and Noble before.

I didn't see where it talks about heads-up tourneys.
It looks like some kind of multi-player format to me.

There are different ways of doing it.

but one way would be kind of similar to a 'shoot-out' style poker tournament:

Start with 10 tables of 6 players each.
You start with $5k in tourney-chips perhaps and can bet anywhere from $5 to everything you have.

Top 2 players from each table advance to the next round plus 1 'wild-card' perhaps.
So you have 21 players in the 2nd round.

Next round is 3 tables of 2 players each.
Top 2 players from each table advance.

6 players at the final-table...and the prize-pool is distributed something like 35/20/15/15/10/5 or something like that.

The round will probably be 25 hands or something like that.
If you lose all your chips then you are eliminated of course...but if you are 3rd in chips after the 25th hand then you still lose even though you still have chips left. Only the top 2 advance.

The strategy is all about varying your bet-size AND making correct strategy adjustments.

If I gain a huge lead on everyone then I would be an idiot to bet my whole stack out there on hte last hand.

Obviously if I'm short-stacked I have to take some risks.
but if I see that someone else is incorrectly betting too much then I can bet the minimum if I think my chances of 'surviving' via the dealer getting a good hand make it the better EV play.

It's kind of similar to the betting strategy in the game-show Jeopardy on the final-round....or when you have a 'double-jeopardy' and get to risk any amount.

But in BJ-tourneys, the betting is done 'in order'. Meaning that you don't get to stall to see how much everyone else is betting...you place your amount to bet when it's your turn.

There is a rotating 'button' just like in poker to determine who has to act on their hand first.

For example, lets say I am last to act on the last hand and put half my chips out there.
I am dealt a hard-17...but 2 of my opponents get dealt blackjacks and pass me in the chip standings.
If just winning my hand will only get me to 3rd place then I HAVE to double-down because it's my ONLY chance.

It's weird to be doubling-down on hard-17 but it can be the correct play.

In fact, you might also be in a position where you turn-down your blackjack payoff in order to double-down on your 'soft-11' instead if it makes a difference between a slim-chance of survival OR getting eliminated.

It gets really tricky when you are not last to act....lets say the guy on the button has a pair of 10's.
My only chance to pass him is to double-down on 14..I catch a 6 and now appear to be in great shape.

now it has somehow become a situation where he has to determine whether his odds are better in hoping the dealer gets a 21 (we would both lose...but perhaps he has more chips remaining than I do and thus would be HOPING for a dealer 21) OR whether he should split his 10's in efforts to win the whole thing.

Of course, there's also the psychology that goes into it.
When I'm next-to-last to act then I also need to try to figure out the odds that the guy on the button will, in fact, make the correct play (what's my 'read' on him) if I leave him with an awkward decision.

Sometimes the decision is FAR from clear and the math behind the correct decision can get very interesting sometimes.
