Re: Anyone get a real gross feeling while they\'re in a casino?
Know lots of people who gamble, for the most part at -EV games.
Maybe it's just luck, but none of them would be considered problem gamblers who are endangering their financial situation. They play with money they can afford to spend, and play for the entertainment factor. None of them are highrollers--they will take $50 or $100 max for an afternoon at the tribal casinos 90 minutes down the road or up to KC or StL on an overniter. Play some slots and VP, make a few bets at the OTB at the Oklahoma casinos. Some are actually a little ahead.....they've hit a few nice jackpots and have the sense to not give it all back the same trip. And when you think about it....spending $50 at a casino is less expensive than a golf outing.....so to each his/her own. |

You sound a bit high and mighty. You do realize that playing poker is also a form of gambling, don't you?

Poker is +EV. [/ QUOTE ] To most people in the cardroom poker is not +EV. (I'm not saying anything about you personally). Most of the people playing at your table would be just as well off throwing their money at a game with a low house advantage like BJ or craps. I'm just wondering why you feel "at home" in the poker room when you're still surrounded by gamblers who are throwing their money away just like the slot players are, if only just a little more slowly. |

I understand it sounds arrogant to "look down at the degenerates" but I just find it really awkward. Poker is +EV. [/ QUOTE ] Not for everyone. Besides, Blackjack and Video Poker both can be +EV at the right times, and Craps is -EV but the house edge is quite low for the fun you get to have. |

Re: Anyone get a real gross feeling while they\'re in a casino?
OP:
This happens to me often, usually around 10 am, when I'm stumbling out to my car to go sleep at that rest stop on th'ACXpressway. Everything looks surreal, like a bad fever dream, and I start to wish for the destruction of the whole fat drug-addled corrupt western world. The freaks and thieves and sad old dumpy grandmas and fat guys without shoes picking at their toes and balding squirrelly ex-executives and blotto guidos are all that’s left of Saturday night’s glamour, and I just want to get the hell out of this hell. I think, “What a colossal waste of time and space and flesh—Something For Nothing, the American Alchemical Dream and I’m no different, I could be doing something productive or creative and instead I’m half-drunk and all tired and as useless as these grotesque, addicted barbarians and losers huddled around their dwindling cups and stacks while the casino rakes their lives into that pit at the center of the whole business…” Unless I booked a big win obviously. Then it's like fricking Cat Stevens is sitting on my forehead..."Mooorning has brooooken...like the first Mooor-oor-ning...! Blue bird had spooooken...like the First Bird!!!!!!OI!1" YEEEHAW! Aiyahh! Gambooool! Vegas in 1 ½ Weeks!!! I can’t wait. --GA |

You sound a bit high and mighty. You do realize that playing poker is also a form of gambling, don't you? [/ QUOTE ] I've noticed a trend on here that anyone who attempts to in any way question the ethics of what we do for fun and profit is immediately accused of self-righteous judgmentalism. I don't think the shoe fits in this case. While most people in a casino are not gambling addicts, there is something troubling about so many people spending their retirement pumping quarters in the slots. (At least poker, even badly played, is a bit more intellectual though not much at its nadir.) Being troubled by it doesn't make me holier-than-thou. |

Re: Anyone get a real gross feeling while they\'re in a casino?
I have that same feeling in a public library, airport, or Chinese restaurant. Handling the chips is really gross. I keep hand sanitizer with me at the table and use it frequently. I make very frequent trips to the restrooms to scrub my hands. And I am not a germ freak or anything.
So if you see a 30-something guy playing 8/16 at the Wynn in February with a travel sized Purell as a card cover... that would be me. |

Re: Anyone get a real gross feeling while they\'re in a casino?
None of that stuff works. Geez, the same person that scrubs ths toilets stuffs the paper towels in the dispenser.
If you look and watch close, you'll see there's a direct line of travel from the 80 million Vegas visitors "hineys" right to your prime rib dinner LOL!. That's before we even begin to discuss "Waste Expo" and the waste disposal in general. Trust me, you really don't want to think about it, or before long you'll realize just about everything is a cesspool to some degree. Geez, the water at the Bellagio is recycled. Think about that the next time you're in that little cloud of humidity in front of the casino, LOL! |
