The original call was OUT - right?

[/ QUOTE ]

Ump claims he never called him out but simply called strike 3 and waited to see if Paul went for put out.

That play counts as a strike out regardless, so maybe the ring up is moot.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is only true if you care only about the pitcher's stats, and not who wins the game.

[/ QUOTE ]
I'm saying, I'm not sure what the rule is here. If he rings it up it counts as the third strike, but does it necessarily mean he's out in this scenario?

Besides, Paul didn't see that signal. In fact, I believe he rolled the ball away before the ump ever made it.

[/ QUOTE ]

Strike three doesn't nessessarly mean that the batter is out. If the catcher doesn't catch the ball, the batter can run to first. It still counts as a strikeout for statistics, however. The record for strikeouts in an inning is 4.

[/ QUOTE ]
I'm aware of this rule. My question is whether the umpires signal ends that play, or if it just signifies strike 3.

And since the players are not mic'ed, it's Paul's fault for not tagging AJP. End of debate.

That is pretty much the question.

I'd love to see Molina put a symbolic tag on the first Chicago batter to strike out in game 3.

[/ QUOTE ]

This will do a lot of good. Especially since the HP ump will be at first or something.

[/ QUOTE ]
Also, probably not a great idea to show up the umpiring crew with 5 games potentially left to play.

You guys need to quit hogging K Steel's time in this thread. He's been mysteriously absent from the Astros/Cards threads! Hmmm...

I saw him pointing to the right to signal strike three and then 'pumping his fist to signal the out'. Didn't anyone else see this?

Thank you,

Jim Kuhn

Pre-umpire press conference the umps were clearly prepped to say that the replay is inconclusive at best.

Awesome, watching those guys plain lie to save themselves.

1. im pretty sure the ball hit the dirt. it comes up at the end.

2. paul should have tagged the guy. no reason not to. in the alcs.

3. the only reason that im unsure of whether what happened was fair or not is because the umpire made the "out" fist. thats not how umps call strikes. when umps pump the fist, its an out.

I only have a few comments about that and I'll get there! But this is the hot topic now and I'm busy putting the naysayers to bed.
