I lived in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
My rent was 800, then one day it went to 1500.

I dunno--I live in a studio in a crappy building in South Williamsburg (by the Marcy JMZ stop.) Do you really think I'm getting that good of a deal? I think what I'm paying is about right.

-- $3,000/month (ouch!).
-- Heart of Greenwich Village (2 blocks from Washington Sq. Park) in NY, NY
-- Doorman building.
-- Pool on roof (membership required)
-- Good access to subways (N/R line and 6 line within 1 block and walking distance from W. 4th St. hub)
-- approx. 900 sq. ft. 1 bedroom/1 bath with separate dining area.
-- building is safe and well run
-- Based on comps, in this insane market it would cost me (believe it or not) $750,000 to $875,000 to buy the apartment.

This thread is crazy. I have been recently looking at 1br apts in SF for $2000-3000 and 1br apts in NYC for $3000-4000.

True. I just posted my $3,000, NY 1 BR/1BA rental.

That's probably true, and I'm quite a bit older than many here. But it doesn't make it any less sick.

Here is a fun fact for those of you outside of NYC. In NYC, if you rent an apartment that costs $4k/month (which is a very nice one bedroom or a decent two bedroom in nice neighborhoods), your move in cost could easily be as high as : first month + last month + security (month) + 2 months broker fee = $20,000 up front to move in to $4k/mo apartment!!!! How sick is that!?!?!

[/ QUOTE ]

You paint an accurate picture, but I did always wonder why someone who had the credit and could afford an apartment that expensive in NYC wouldn't be able to put a down payment on a similar apartment.

Also, just curious, what neighborhoods have you been looking at in NYC?

[/ QUOTE ]

If I go to NYC, which is about a 50/50 proposition right now, I'd most likely stay there for about 2 years. I can also likely afford to live in a nicer place renting than I'd be comfortable buying. FWIW, a number of my friends in NYC have recently sold their places and plan on renting for a couple of years before buying again.

As for neighborhoods, I've mainly looked at Union Square, East Village, and Tribeca.

[/ QUOTE ]

If you come to NYC with a two-year time horizon I personally think yuowould be crazy to buy rather than rent the comparable aprtment. Of course, some people would think you are missing an opportunity to make mucho moola buying and selling for a profit in a couple of years. I disagree but am biased as can be seen from my blog:
