Cards thrown into the muck may be ruled dead. However, a hand that is clearly identifiable may be retrieved at management’s discretion if doing so is in the best interest of the game.
Just after that rule comes :

If you fail to protect your hand, you will have no redress if it becomes fouled or the dealer accidentally kills it.

[/ QUOTE ]

Okay, I think I understand now. Your cards are potentially retrievable if you (or presumably another player) toss them in the muck, but if the dealer tosses them, they're dead.

Phil Hellmuth & Steve Stoltzman are at the ESPN table. Anybody know is this is John Stoltzman's dad that split the Tunica winning's with him?

You have to scroll thru the Cardplayer, Gutshot, Pokertrails, Pokerpages etc. sites to find out if people were eliminated.

Cards thrown into the muck may be ruled dead. However, a hand that is clearly identifiable may be retrieved at management’s discretion if doing so is in the best interest of the game. We will make an extra effort to rule a hand retrievable if it was folded as a result of false information given to the player.

Just after that rule comes :

If you fail to protect your hand, you will have no redress if it becomes fouled or the dealer accidentally kills it.

The extra part there is to try to prevent a player from angle shooting by declaring at the showdown "I have the full boat", getting the person who has the flush to muck, and then after everyone has mucked having the declarer say "Sorry, I mean just trips" and show the trips. Now if the player who mucked their cards with the flush protests then the floor MAY be more likely to rule that the hand was recoverable and the player who misdeclared their hand was angle shooting.

Yeah, I thought the same thing. That has to be a misprint with two pair, 9s and 7s with the A and 5 playing.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ah, I had wondered the same thing, and posted about it on the Beginners forum. (I figured if I can't read the board in hold 'em then I need be posting in Beginners.) I had thought maybe quad nines (which would be unfucking believable) but your two pair makes more sense.
