dude, just thought of something, wouldn't buying still be the better option, since that interest you pay is tax deductible?

[/ QUOTE ]
Well, the interest being tax-deductible is a consideration, and you can mathematically figure out where the break-even point would be, but yes you can pay a little more in interest than in rent and come out even (unless, of course, you now have to itemize solely for mortgage interest instead of taking the standard deduction).

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of home ownership. It's just that most people have ill-conceived assumptions about the financial benefits of doing so.

My little story was meant to show that renting isn't necessarily throwing away money compared to buying a house. Compared to staying at home with your parents, it obviously is.

That's alright, at least you get over on Mom and Dad while at the same time satisfying all of your Freudian desires by doing it in your parents' bed.

After reading this entire thread, I have one question for you -

Has life ever truely handed you any hardship? You simply sound spoiled to me. Getting back to your original post, your dad is a [censored] for not booting you out on your own to fend for yourself and mature a little.

I am not being snide or taking a shot at you, that's just my read.

what kind of hardship do you mean? my family is not wealthy in the least. neither of my parents had jobs for a long time. i am far from spoiled, unless you consider spoiled meaning you have parents who don't kick you out of the house.
