[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Regardless of how much Raymer may love his daughter it doesn't change the fact that his action here was inappropriate and ineffectual. [/ QUOTE ] You sound like a real liberal. What do you consider an appropriate way to handle the situation? [/ QUOTE ] Since when does being a liberal mean you are a pussy? [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, that's a horrible response, betgo. "You sound like a real liberal." Give me a break. [/ QUOTE ] Sorry, didn't mean to insult liberals. |

[ QUOTE ]
As I said previously you can start by notifying security, your daughters caretaker, and the police. I still don't get why everyone insists they'd "take care of it". What the heck are you going to do to a guy who's 20 feet away across a crowded room? Screaming threats at the guy is just going to make him angry, and if he is a serious threat it's only going to make it more likely that he harms someone. I've watched my best friend go the last 13 years without a dad because his father gunned down 2 persons that he suspected of raping his daughter. I'm sorry if taking a slightly more rational approach to justice makes me a liberal pussy. [/ QUOTE ] Raymer threatened the guy. He didn't "take the law into his own hands." Notifying the police and security is a good idea too. |

And I wasn't lying. If anybody messes with my family, I'm going to kill them as certainly as I possibly can. [/ QUOTE ] Also I'm not sure about Nevada laws, but in many cases it's illegal to make a death threat (it might even be federal, I'm no lawyer). I understand that Raymer was acting out of emotion when he made the threat but I just don't see why everyone's supporting it. edit: To be fair I don't know if the creepy guys actions are illegal. They do seem threatening but there wasn't anything direct. Anyone lawyers/police on these boards to shed some light on this? At the very least Casino security can bar him from the grounds. |

[/ QUOTE ] Playing poker in underground places and maybe home games and on the Internet is also illegal. I don't think any jury would convict someone for making that threat. |

Probably not but that's an awful lot of hassle to go through considering you accomplish absolutely nothing with your threat. Which given Raymers status as reigning world champion could very well be the goal of Creepy Guy.
I just can't find any positive value from issuing this threat, yet the board erupted in cheers upon hearing it. Far better to step out of the tournament for a moment and take actions to ensure your family's safety. Then take some time to cool off and regain your focus before returning. |

Good point, wouldn't want to have a discussion on an internet forum.

Aside from emotional issues, Raymer is an attorney and a poker player, and he probably knows how to protect himself (and his family) and what technical violations he can get away with.

I'm sorry but I'm just not willing to accept your personal experience as evidence. Since you don't know me your really not qualified to judge my emotional attachment to my friends/family. I really don't want to turn this into an argument about parental love. I just don't like being told that I'm not allowed to judge Raymer simply because I'm not a father. [/ QUOTE ] I never said you weren't allowed to have an opinion, just that you don't understand the feelings you will develop when you become a real father (being a sperm donor isn't the same thing, i can tell you that from experience as well). Certainly I'm not judging your other emotional attachments, but they aren't the same feelings you develop when a tiny little eight pound person needs your constant attention just to keep it alive. |

[ QUOTE ]
My wife was sitting in the press area, where only press and staff are allowed. She got special dispensation from the staff to be there. Some guy comes in who is not allowed, sits next to her, and starts asking her all about our daughter. He wants to know where she is, who's watching her now, what she looks like, and my wife is totally freaking out from his questions and attitude. She asks to have him removed, and tells me what was going on. I look at him on the rail a minute later, and he's pointing at her, pointing at me, talking to people in the crowd, and has a psycho-mad look on his face. I stand up and tell him to watch himself. He has an even angrier look on his facee, and yells out that he was just asking about my daughter. My immediate reaction, based upon his demeanor and attitude is that he really is a threat. I told him that if he messed with my daugher or family, I would kill him. I shouted all this across a 20 foot gap, and yes, everyone could here it, and it happened. And I wasn't lying. If anybody messes with my family, I'm going to kill them as certainly as I possibly can. Later, Greg Raymer (FossilMan) [/ QUOTE ] Hi Greg, As a lawyer, don't you know that this is common-law assault? "The assault offense was expanded to include menacing as well as actual attempts to do physical harm to another. It also generally included so called conditional assaults, i.e. situations where the actor threatened violence without justification or excuse if the victim did not engage in conduct demanded by the actor." American Law Institute, Model Penal Code and Commentaries, Comment to Section 211.1 (192) at 175-84. With defense-of-others caveats of course. Wayf, 1L |
