This thread is crazy. I have been recently looking at 1br apts in SF for $2000-3000 and 1br apts in NYC for $3000-4000.

Dude, I know. Just moved to San Fran and the prices are out of this world. For my studio I am paying 1250 a month without parking. The one bedrooms here were so much more expensive. A minimum of 1700 for a decent place.

Cool. I'll take Cali though, insane cost of living, bad roads and all.

i like philadelphia a lot as a city. its got character, great bars, etc. i mean, in terms of cultural events, it may not have nearly as much as other places, but it has a good amount.

i have family out in Cali and spent some time out there... i dont think i could ever adjust to the pace at which things operate there.

you should come visit sometime. just avoid the touristy crap like the liberty bell (it's really not that interesting, plus you only get like 5 minutes to see it now on the tour apparently out of fear of terrorism)

and get a cheesesteak.

whiz with.

I suspect that people with higher-end rents are less likely to respond in this thread. Also, you probably have higher standards of living than most posters here.

That's probably true, and I'm quite a bit older than many here. But it doesn't make it any less sick.

Here is a fun fact for those of you outside of NYC. In NYC, if you rent an apartment that costs $4k/month (which is a very nice one bedroom or a decent two bedroom in nice neighborhoods), your move in cost could easily be as high as : first month + last month + security (month) + 2 months broker fee = $20,000 up front to move in to $4k/mo apartment!!!! How sick is that!?!?!

This is definitely true. If you are paying more than 2k a month you could definitely buy a place and pay almost the same in mortgage (which is tax deductible) as you would in rent.

only the interest is tax deductable, but still.

although NYC is and expensive place to buy, and not because of value, but because of taxes etc.

even if you refinance you have to pay some sort of tax on the money you receive.
