I completely see what you are saying about the difference between calling names and somewhat passing insults. It's an unenviable job to be the one who has to make those kinds of judgement calls while also trying to stay as consistent as possible.

It's easy to win arguments when nobody is arguing the opposite position. NOBODY is saying that the looting is excusable (but for food, etc. to stay alive.)

You can pretend like they are and keep winning that argument, though.

Except that the post I reponded to considered it to be unimportant where I think stopping chaos from spreading and instilling law and order is extremely important and I would support the some use of lethal force to do this.

For example let's say a cop is faced with A) saving someone trapped in a building or B )going over to the store being looted and stoping the looters. No one disagrees he should choose A

However if he is not faced with A) and there is some looting he could stop I think he should do so and since he really has no means of arrest or detention I think he should if necessary use lethal force to do so. This doesn't mean he goes in guns blazing but if after being ordered to stop people do not, then yes he should shoot them.

if he were to encounter someone setting a building on fire, he should shoot them

if the police where to spot roaming gangs terrorizing people they should shoot them.

EDIT: BTW, I'm all for this looting and I don't blame the people doing it one bit. Bush diverted funding from projects intended to strengthen the levees to increase funding for Homeland Security and the Iraqi war. This incident is just further proof that government cannot protect us.
