I'm just saying for disputed titles. [/ QUOTE ] I know what you're saying, but comedy should be pretty self-evident. We've decided not to include cross-genre titles, so this shouldn't be too much of an ordeal. He's busting your balls about Three Amigos. |

Monty Python -- Grail and Life of Brian [/ QUOTE ] Grail was very funny, but pales in comparison to Life of Brian. It (which I watched 15 minutes ago) is the funniest movie ever after Zoolander. |

Andy,
The threads come and go to quickly here these days, and most of these people think Caddyshack or Animal House is the ne plus ultra of comedy. (Of course, both do have their moments.) Okay, here a quick definition of comedy--it ends with a wedding or a couple finds each other. I've been watching many old comedies lately--I think they're good for my soul (an imaginary construct) right now. My cousin visited from California after my father's death recently, and my mom, cousin, and I watched City Lights. They had never seen it before, and we were all crying at the end. This is comedy in its highest from. So, since my favorite comedies are ruled out, I'll vote for Hannah and Her Sisters, which is beginning to displace Manhattan as my favorite Woody Allen. And John Candy in Trains, Planes, and Automobiles does have something of Charlie Chaplin in him. Also, Bill Forsyth's Local Hero is a great comedy. For pure laughs (and because I can't pick Duck Soup), nothing beats Monty Python and the Holy Grail ("farcical aquatic ceremony"). For black comedy, Election is terrific (I guess Putney Swope is out). Tootsie also has some great performances. And I might the only person on earth (well except for one firend) that thinks Mike Leigh's Naked is hilarious. Last, one more "comedy" or at least one with many comic moments is a sweet movie called Once Around with Richard Dreyfuss and Holly Hunter. I recommend it highly. |
