[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] why not? [/ QUOTE ] You don't have to throw anyone out at home who is tagging up from 3rd if you catch the ball - that guy is now going to score automatically. If it falls in front, you are coming in and can throw out the guy coming in from 2nd. If it goes over your head though, you definitely lose all 3 runs. Play back and the most you give up is two and have a shot at the plate to keep it at 1. It's the first inning, you can't afford to have what happened, happen. [/ QUOTE ] um, there were two outs - no one is tagging. [/ QUOTE ] Read carefully. That was part of my point. |

FWIW, the next day Scioscia said Anderson took a good route to the ball (which he didn't) and that they were playing him relatively shallow in left (which they were) reasoning that the lefty was more likely to dump one shallow into left than blast one deep (which is true). And that Anderson is perfectly healthy and playing at 100% defensively (which he is not).

newsday article
[ QUOTE ] Ryan, the Orioles' closer and free-agent-to-be, said yesterday he doesn't have to be a closer and wants desperately to play for a winner. "That's got to be a good atmosphere to play in every day," he said. "Playing in front of 40- or 50,000 in New York and a packed house in Boston, the atmosphere is there every night. If you go out and produce, you're going to have a lot of people behind you." [/ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Ryan, 29, a hard-throwing lefthander, seemed excited by the prospect of being courted by the Yankees. "Of course you'd listen. It's the Yankees," he said. "They put winners on the field. That's what it boils down to: You want to play for a winner." Ryan said closing is not nearly as important as winning is to him. "It was a good experience to close, but pitching late in the game, pitching in the seventh, eighth or ninth innings, it's all pretty much the same to me," he said. "You're still pitching in pressure situations, with runners on base late in the game." [/ QUOTE ] dear mr ryan, please come play for the yankees. enclosed is a check for a lot. |

[ QUOTE ] dear mr ryan, please come play for the yankees. enclosed is a check for a lot. [/ QUOTE ] 7th inning? rivera replacment soon? [/ QUOTE ] Don't overestimate Ryan. He'll be 30 at the start of next year and he's only had two good seasons. He'd make a great setup man. But, he's not somebody to be used as a cornerstone of your team. |

Gordon's a righty. Ryan is a lefty. They're not interchangable.
