This is what I think Bart was saying .. I was on the potty when this went down.
AK VS A4 ... If you have ace king vs ace 4 and the guy hits his 4 you have 3 kings for outs and a push if the board double pairs higher than 4. If you have JJ vs A9 and the guy hits his ace you have only 2 outs for jacks. On the surface both the underdogs only have 3 outs but with the re-draws it makes AK the better hand.

You generally would be allowed to go back when putting in several stacks, as long as it is done without pausing. From Robert's Rules of Poker "6. At non-tournament play, a player who says "raise" is allowed to continue putting chips into the pot with more than one move; the wager is assumed complete when the player's hands come to rest outside the pot area. (This rule is used because no-limit play may require a large number of chips be put into the pot.) In tournament play, the TDA rules require that the player either use a verbal statement giving the amount of the raise or put the chips into the pot in a single motion, to avoid making a string-bet. Robert's Rules should be similar to the Bike's rules. Since Patrick was only putting in two (albeit big) stacks, it's not clear whether this rule applies. I forsee TDA rules spreading to the floor unless their rule just isn't applicable to ring game play. ~ Rick
