2.That's silly yo say clutch doesn't exist.I know all you stats guys adore bill James but just because he says it doesn't exist doesnt make it so.

[/ QUOTE ]

FWIW, Bill James does not say clutch hitting doesn't exist.

[/ QUOTE ]

I am very glad to hear that as Mr. James works for my beloved Red Sox.

I get pissed off when somebody insults me and does not back it up. That's why I posted twice, because the first was a reflex and the 2nd was after 30 seconds of thinking.

Nothing against Rivera, but this year doesn't stand out much for a closer. The ERA is nice, but pitcher's have had better ERAs in more innings and still not won the CY (how about Eckersley in 90. 73 IP, 0.62 ERA). To win the Cy Young award as a reliever, you need to have a monumental season. Look at Eric Gagne's 2003, for example:

82.3 IP. 1.20 ERA 137 K's, 20 BBs, 55 saves.

Now THOSE are jaw dropping numbers.

And what about Huston Street this year? More IP, and a 1.20 ERA. Dustin Hermanson? 1.61 ERA. MIKE TIMLIN??? 1.93 ERA in more IP.

Okay, but maybe Rivera is more important for his team? He's got only 36 saves - putting him on pace for about his 6th highest career total. His WXRL (Expected wins added above replacement player) is 17th in the Majors for relievers.

Rivera's season just is not THAT great for a closer.

good, great, what the [censored]. I meant the same damn thing.

You're being an ass. You were wrong and you know it.

Edit: seriously - you're nitpicking. My first sentence of my original post should have tipped off the fact that I meant that his season, for a closer, was not nearly good enough to win the CYA. If I forgot to put a proper accent on the word THAT, then screw me.

It was immature and stupid for you to say that I lost all my credibility. I know I'm overreacting, but it pissed me off. And your insistence on nitpicking with my slightly different choice of words, even though my feelings were EXACTLY the same before and after my original post, really annoys the hell out of me.

I'm sorry my original post offended you. In retrospect it could be construed as insulting. I should have worded it differently and said that your statement wasn't credible instead of saying you lost all credibilty.

So yes in that respect I was wrong and I acknowlege that, but I still think your statement was wrong. Hope there are no lingering hard feelings.

I actually agree with doug about mariano. He's having a really good year, not a great year.

Saying it "isnt that good for a closer" is only when you compare the season to the greatest seasons by closers. In that light, no, this season is not particularly great. But saying it isnt that good is a poor choice of words.
