Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] I absolutely love mario kart, but the SNES version has nothing on Contra. I think the N64 version is what too many people are basing this on. [/ QUOTE ] You really think that the N64 version of Mario Kart is better than the original? Wow. I'm not huge on Mario Kart (although my roommates and I have been playing a lot of Double Dash the past few weeks), but I was under the impression that it was generally understood that the SNES one was better than the N64 one. [/ QUOTE ] I think Super Mario Kart actually improved significantly from SNES to N64, with the addition of so many more characters and racetracks. It's the Game Cube version that truly sucks. |

Re: SMB 3 VS FF6
ZeeJustin:
I don't know man, in terms of gameplay I'd give the nod to Super Mario World. The level progress and all the secret stuff in this one beats out even SMB3. But it was for a much more advanced game system so I definitely see where you're coming from. In terms of RPGs how can FF7 not be the one choice in this. That freakin' game is incredible to play now, eight years later. Swede |

I agree. I'm not too big into RPG's but Chrono Trigger is bomb. It's probably #2 RPG for me behind FF7. Final Fantasies for SNES where great too except Final Fantasy Legends I think it was (the crappy one that always sold for like 10 bucks). [/ QUOTE ] You cna not consider that game part of the main Final Fantasy Series, just like Mario Paint can't be considered part of the main Mario Series. |

Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
lol no offense taken of course. I disagree, however. Every one of us has this kind of bias in favor of the new and groundbreaking, and we should. It's a lot easier to make a clone of a clone of an innovative game than it is to come up with something original and influential. The copycats have all the time in the world (not to mention newer technology) to polish other people's ideas until they shine their brightest, while the originators have the challenge of creating something great from nothing, and setting a standard that will last a while. That's why Mario 64 is remembered and Banjo Kazooie is forgotten (at the time, a lot of people were saying Banjo was a better game), that's why Citizen Kane still makes top ten lists, that's why some crap like Sum 41 can't be a better band than the Clash. Originality gets extra points over polished rehashes. Also, in my mind, influence is a part of quality. Part of being the best is being important. Milestones stand out, sometimes more than masterpieces, and I think that's just giving credit where credit is due.

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] splashpot, i totally agree. While SMB3 is an excellent game, FFVI is the the best RPG ever made (I'll accept arguments for FFVII). The best gameplay, amazing story, amazing side quests. It just didn't get any better than this game. How dare it lose so badly to a decent side scroller. [/ QUOTE ] have you tried FF5? it has the job setup like FFT, but in an rpg, good times. In the end, nostalgia over a mainstream game beats nostalgia over a classic rpg, it makes sense. [/ QUOTE ] FFV was fun. FFVI was great. FFVII was good. FFVIII was awesome. FFIX was sweet. FFX is the best. FFX-2 isn't bad either. [/ QUOTE ] ehhh, wrong answer FFI was ..groundbreaking but I cant play through it for the life of me, FFV is schockingly good FFVI is a masterpiece FF7 is the best FFVIII just wasnt VII no matter how hard it tried FFIX was a joke FFX was corny but decent, a lil too easy to beat FFX-2 is the beginning of the end for final fantasy... you [censored] change their dresses for gods sake, and the way you progressed in the story felt archaic, not to mention the first video was an anime music video. [/ QUOTE ] Wow, I agree with everything in this post. Nothing to add. Edit: I'll add that it is truly over... and it makes me very sad. Hironobu Sakaguchi (main man behind every previous game) and Nobuo Uematsu (musical genius, as important to the FF games as anyone else) have left SquareEnix. The one ray of light, Yasumi Matsuno (the guy behind FF Tactics and Vagrant Story) apparently had a nervous breakdown while working on FFXII last I heard, and now that game is in limbo. It was a mighty run, I don't think it will ever be the same again. |
