Re: The worst city in America with a major sports franchise...
[ QUOTE ]
Is that recent? I was last there in 2002 and I loved it as much as the first time I went there in 1999. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah, I've lived here all my life and I've always loved the area. But now I'm dying to get out. I always held out some hope that Portland would make some strides toward becoming a bigger, cleaner, and better city. But it's just not happening. - Traffic/congestion is terrible for its size. - City gov't is totally inept and/or corrupt. - The Willamette is superfund (i.e. so filthy and polluted it gets a fancy name). - We have one major sports team, which is a mess. I'm a firm believer that sports teams often give a city its identity, or part of anyway. - The people here drive me nuts. I don't really know how to put into words other than to tell you to envision a bunch of country folk moving into the city and pretending to be rich and sophisticated. That's your average Portlander. - imo, nightlife and dining are substandard for a city this size. - Our unemployment rate was sky-high a year ago. Not sure how it is now but im sure its still rather high. - High property/income taxes (compared to WA at least) People are fleeing across the river in droves...with good reason. I live in Vancouver now, but I'm buying a house later this year in Portland. I have this nagging feeling I'm making a mistake. I think it just comes down to a decade or more of really bad leadership in this city that has allowed things to get out of hand. Downtown is still a pretty neat area, but all the surrounding areas are just trash, imo. Congested, polluted, infested with morons...meh. |

Winter in Buffalo is better than most northern cities. At least they get snow. There is nothing worse than just flat-out cold, but minimal snow, like you would get in Iowa or something.

2. Sacramento. True, Oakland is a den of iniquity, but it is close to San Francisco, which has a couple things going for it. [/ QUOTE ] We Need More Cowbell!! |
