i don't know. barry bonds won an awful lot of mvp's in a row.

[/ QUOTE ]

All for his defense, I'm sure.

[/ QUOTE ]

this is out of context. you said the voters like to mix it up. but barry is not a below average fielder.

[ QUOTE ]
Contributing to wins is the very definition of value. I would argue that the measurement of contribution to wins regardless of how that contribution was made is the important thing.

[/ QUOTE ]

there has been debate over this. many voters seemed to think that arod's production on a last place team was good enough. he did not have many win shares.

[ QUOTE ]

Really, I'm not sure we are very far apart here. I think we're both close to saying the same thing.

[/ QUOTE ]

probably, i am done with this thread now.

[ QUOTE ]

I don't know the Yanks #'s out of the DH spot this year. But say you put A-Rod @ DH, and a player with the Yanks DH #'s at third, who was but an average defensive player. How many more games do your really think the Yankees would have lost?

[/ QUOTE ]

i am lost here. really, no idea what your point is. also, your runs worth = runs produced + runs saved makes some sense, but fielders save a whole lot more runs than any one hitter produces. it also ignores the whole "clutch" thing that ortiz fans like to bring up.

[ QUOTE ]
Is it really A-Rod's defense that makes him so great?

[/ QUOTE ]

arod is great because he is such a well-rounded player. he is a threat everywhere he plays. field, batter's box, on the bases. there are greater hitters, and there are greater fielders. he is best all-around.

Yount, Kent, A-Rod, I-Rod, Rizzuto, Boyer . . . these come to mind just now as players whose defense contributed to their winning the MVP award.

When you pick the MVP you try to pick the most valuable player. A player who doesn't play on defense is at a disadvantage.

Mo Vaughn won his MVP because the voters hated Albert Belle. With good reason.
