Here's a situation for you. Just got moved to a new table 2 minutes ago, dealt AKo UTG+1. I open for a standard 2600 and someone in MP goes all-in for like 30k. Everyone folds and I have like 16k left in my stack.

I folded on the theory that AK is not the hand to call an all-in, but... who knows. Hard to deal with a completely unknown player sometimes.

I'm no mathiac, but I have to think that when you plug in all the hands he's likely to push with in that situation & compare to your AK, calling would be +EV. I'd think that the vast majority of the time you're either in a race or way ahead of a weaker ace/KQs.

Then again, I did the same mental calculation last week on the bubble of the 500k, called the all in, and lost to AQs.

Up to 17K. Pushed A2 with about 5x the BB. Called by AQ and sucked out. Borrowed time...

Up to 23k now. Someone pushed with KQs, I called with AK, he flopped 2 of his suit and hit a Q but there was an A in there somewhere and I hung on.

This is kind of fun. Makes me wonder why I took a break.

Default Out

I've got about 15K with blinds 750/1500. EP min-raises to 3K. LP calls. I'm on the button with AQo. I push. EP calls w/KK. I need more action than that to fold AQ with 10 BBs left I think. Finished 123 for $360.

Assuming you don't know anything about EP I'm fine with the play. It's a long way from here to the real money and you have to take your action where you can find it. Of course after seeing the cards "everyone" knows that a miniraise means a big pair!

Yeah, EP was unknown (I'd only been at the table for about an orbit), though he hadn't been raising a whole bunch. To be honest, I think I let myself be influenced by the fact that the hand before I'd folded AJo in the SB to an MP raise.

Amusingly enough, the min-raise flat-caller said he had AK. Boy do I wish he'd played it like I would have (i.e. raised/pushed), and I could have mucked that AQ without a second thought.
