When only a bluff can take down the pot for you
OK so you’re in a hand where you have a monster draw maybe a nut flush draw or a flush/str8 draw. You call a small bet on the flop, and again on the turn. The river comes and you miss your draw completely, however you’re opponent now checks, do you ever just check and give up the hand?
I seem to be doing this a lot lately; usually I’m shown top pair with a decent kicker, other times sets or two pair. What’s everyone thought’s on this subject, I’m beginning to feel this is a very week way to play the hand and that if he’s opening the door for you to try and steal the pot, you should go for it. |

Re: When only a bluff can take down the pot for you
depends on if they're checking and giving up or checking to induce a bluff. a lot of times people will check the river because they feel comfortable calling a large bet (bluff snapping off equity) and they will feel sick if they get raised. against such check and call the river plays such moves are really unprofitable.

Re: When only a bluff can take down the pot for you
In general, if an opponent has been making Post-Oak bets at the pot in the 2 post-flop betting round and I've been calling him down, I will usually make a decent sized bet if he checks, probably about the size of the pot, in an effort to take down the pot because he is showing weakness. If I get called, I lose the pot, and if I get raised, then generally I know I'm beat.
This is my general rule of thumb, but then I take alot of the small pots down which can afford me to make bets like this. If you're running on a less than average bankroll, I wouldn't suggest doing this as it can sometimes bite you in the ass real bad. |

Just get done reading Super System? [/ QUOTE ] and in young's defense, s/s is talking about small wins freeing you up to play back and get all-in on the flop with a draw, not take stabs on the river. |
