Online gambling may soon be legal
I'm cautiously optimistic about this. There will likely be a lengthy appeals process in the WTO, and I don't think the WTO can really enforce its rulings other than through fines, but this is still a very positive development. Here's the full article from Forbes:

International treaties and International Organizations mean very little to my administration - you all should know that by now.
US law will be determined by Americans, W |

Re: Online gambling may soon be legal
I'm a big supporter of Bush, but don't be so sure.
When the WTO overturned our steel tariffs, we changed them. International law is by and large a crock o' crap. But on the occasion when we do choose to join an international organization, a la the WTO, then we generally agree to follow those decisions. |

The new McCarthyism (sp?)
[ QUOTE ]
The U.S. has said it is thinking about its most vulnerable citizens. Its ambassador to the WTO, Linnet Deily, has defended U.S. law by saying, "The United States has grave concerns over the financial and social risks posed by such activities to its citizens, particularly but not exclusively children." She also argues that Internet gambling operations are a potential boon to terrorists as they facilitate money laundering. . [/ QUOTE ] Now...okay, I can see some crafty terrorists using the money transfer feature to send $$ to one another but, GMAFB!!!! I guess when Cheney was CEO of Halliburton and they bought oil from "embargoed" Iraq through their semi-disgused pyramid of foreign subsidiaries, thus helping fund a cash-starved "terrorist loving regime" and keep it in power, that was okay, but OMFG, we can't let the terrorists take over the world through Poker Stars, Party Poker, and other internet gambling!!!! I guess next time someone on Poker Stars begs me for $5.50 to play a SNG, I'll just tell that terrorist to go f--k himself. Ah...feels good to do my part for the red, white, and blue. |

O/T Steel Tariffs
"When the WTO overturned our steel tariffs, we changed them"
This is entirely disingenuous as the steel tariffs were so blatantly illegal that there was no doubt they would be ruled so by the WTO. The WTO decision just gave Bush the chance to exit from a very bad policy -- not only does protectionsim cost jobs in the long term in Bush's case it cost jobs in the short term as the already high price of steel in the US went up and there was a net loss of jobs in industries dependent on steel. Effectively for the sake of temp. saving a few jobs in a US Steel industry that were doomed anyway he lost many more highly skilled, susteainable jobs in engineering and manufacturing. |

But W lost Florida, [/ QUOTE ] Guess again. [ QUOTE ] Had Al Gore gotten the Florida vote recount he wanted, George W. Bush would still be president today, winning by a margin of 1,665 votes. [/ QUOTE ] USA Today |
