Recommend me some music.
I was feeling pretty out of the loop musically, so I downloaded the last edition of NPR's "All Songs Considered" a few days ago and went throught the two-hour podcast pretty quick. They mentioned a few albums I had, noteably Beck's Guero, and a few albums that I simply can't get into - I'm looking at you, Jack White. But otherwise, most of the stuff I'd heard just didn't interest me that much aside from Sufjan Stevens' Illinoise. Otherwise, the last few things I stole from the RIAA or otherwise obtained include some stuff from The Shins, Stephen Malkmus' Face The Truth, Ben Folds, and a great first effort by Ray Lamontagne.
The only other real standout that I'm going to have to pick up, sound-unseen as it were, is the newly discovered Carnegie sessions from Coltrane and Monk. So help me out, people! I'm a fan of indie rock, techno, and just about anything good except hip-hop and country. What else came out this past year that I'm completely missing out on. |

Ah...The Decemberists was one I forgot about. I think I'm going to have to pick that one up tomorrow. They've got this sort of less polished Harvey Danger sound going on.

Re: Recommend me some music.
Malkmus - Face the Truth is right up there with Pink Floyd - Momentary Lapse of Reason as "most apt album title of alltime." That record sounds like SM smoked about 15 bowls, then jerked off all over the tape deck. He lost it somewhere in the middle of Pig Lib, and it doesn't look like he's ever going to find it again. Such a shame, since Pavement (the SM songs, not the spiral crap) is probably one of the best 4 or 5 rock bands ever.
Anyway, music sucked this year. Some things that didn't suck: Spoon - Gimme Fiction. not quite as good as the 10.0 Kill the Moonlight, but still pretty damn incredible. Doves - Some Cities. give it a few listens....this record is all over the place, so it takes a little while to settle in, but once it does, it's a real treat. One that hasn't been mentioned yet... Giant Drag - Hearts and Unicorns. Like the Breeders with a touch of My Bloody Valentine, and a lot of snark. They're better live, and their best track isn't on this album, but the record is still pretty damn good. |

Re: Recommend me some music.
When I was trying to legally fill my wife's new ipod with free junx I came across INSOUND music store. They have hundreds of free and legal downloads of bands even *I* in my infinite wisdom had never encountered.
My favorite obscure-ish discoveries from this site: Call and Response Dr. Dog Coco Rosie John Vanderslice the Cribs the Aislers Set Gene Defcon Starlight Mints Appolo Sunshine Dios Malos Casiotone Royal City Norfolk & Western Hidden Cameras Julie Doiron It also has singles by bands I'd been meaning to check out for a while like National, Of Montreal, Stella*, Beulah, Pinback, etc... Free is good, --GA |
