The generic answer is Super System as a starting book, and I'm actually leaning towards that. I fear that other books such as HOH or ToP might be above him.
What is the best newbie book that you might recommend? I started on SS and then went to HOH and ToP but I don't know if that was ideal. (Although I'm crushing the 50NL ) |

i've done this twice (brother and granfather-in-law), gave them both Ed Miller's new book. Super System for a new player would be suicide i think.

i read ssh when i was first starting... but i had some idea of how the game was played before... so i'm not sure if it would be too much for him or not

My dad asked me, too. I told him he is going to read ToP, and since I could benefit from a re-read if go with him. he wants to learn holdem, but i said learn poker first. I got him GSIH for christmas, which is what he wants.

I thought the "Winning Low-Limit Hold'em" by Lee Jones was a great book for beginners. I have loaned it to several new players and they all seemed to enjoy it. That assumes, of course, that he is willing to start with the limit game.
My personal opinion is that it is easier to learn by playing limit (getting familiar with pot odds, etc.). Lee Jones' book is very specific about how to play hands and is a great starting book that will allow him to jump in to an average low-limit game and come out ahead quickly. It is weak on theory and emphasizes a style that isn't as profitable over the long run, but I think it is perfect for a starter. |

Marlow actually really liked the Little Green Book. It has starting hand charts and such. I haven't checked it out yet but it's on my Christmas list

Very good introduction to no-limit. Not as in-depth as harrington, but it lays out the basics fairly well. |
