Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3

To this day, the only musical instrument that I know how to play is the Ocarina of Time. [/ QUOTE ] I actually learned how to play (most of) the Red Dwarf theme on the Ocarina of Time and the Nocturne of Shadow on a real ocarina. Whether this is admiration or abuse worthy, I don't know. |

Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
I voted for Street Fighter II. ALTTP is still a gem, one of the most finely crafted games ever. SFII was a revolution. It changed arcades forever, it birthed a genre and set the bar incredibly high. SFII had a much more important impact, even if ALTTP was the better game.
Super Metroid >>>> Mega Man anything. Super Mario 3 was perhaps the best console game of all time when it was released, certainly the best platformer, and still stands among the greats. Super Mario 2 was great fun, quirky and original, but it wouldn't still be relevant today if it was released as Doki Doki Panic. Super Mario 3 would still be one of the great games of all time by any other name. Still, FFVI is a masterpiece, and it should not lose to SMB3. It gets by on the strength of the opera house scene alone. You guys have convinced me to give this X-com game a try. If someone who's played both games says it lives up to Chrono Trigger, I expect something spectacular. If it's a disappointment, a plague on all your households. |

Here's a hint: Some items can be built for a profit and will help fund you. When you find what those are, always be making some of them, and make a beeline to research them.
You will have a good time. |

Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
Not efficiently, as I remember, especially as the scientists and engineers you have to pay to make and research them cost money too. You have to beat that cost to come out ahead. There are a lot of things you can build that just use up the potential profits you could make building something else and wind up getting you way behind.
I do remember four items stand out in particular for making profit, and a couple for making some profit that are so slow building and not really all that profitable that it just isn't worth it. The two best items are produced very quickly and don't use any hard to renew resources, and two are not quite so profitable but still make good money, but they use up resources that must be gained slowly and haphazardly in battle, and those resources are better used for fighting aliens and powering ships. |

I vote SMB3 all the way to the finals [/ QUOTE ] It's kind of hard to argue with that. Also, it is still the highest selling game of all-time (not counting bundled copies of games) by a wide margain. Top 10 sellers: * Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES - 17.28 million) * Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2 - 12 million) * Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2 - 12 million) * Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (PS2 - 11 million) * Gran Turismo (PS1 - 10.5 million) * Grand Theft Auto III (PS2 - 10 million) * Final Fantasy VII (PS1 - 9.8 million) * Gran Turismo 2 (PS1 - 8.5 million) * GoldenEye 007 (N64 - 8 million) * Gran Turismo 4 (PS2 - 8 million) |

Re: Best Video Game 1988-1994 Round 3
I'm always gonna give a big maybe to saying any sports game is the best, because a gigantic amount depends on if you like the sport in the first place. There's a huge gulf there that's kind of pre-ordained.
Like, I like soccer and hockey and basketball better, and if I got the greatest baseball game of all time to play, I would probably like a merely decent hockey game better. It's probably almost impossible to evaluate sports games without bringing in heavily how much you like the sport. |
