Break Even
I'm a new player of OH8 been playing about 4 months, I use Hutchinson's point system as a guide for starting hands it seems the best I can do is break even, I've played 2700 hands and have lost .62 cents. Just wondering is this point system to tight,,,Should there be more starting hands that I should play or Have I just not played enough hands.
Playing 1 to 2 tables of 50/1.00 Thanks, |

Re: Break Even
I've been using what is essecially that same point count system. After a while counting the points is not really nescisary. I'd wager that if you are having problems making money using fairly tight preflop standards, you probably need to work on your post flop play. Or maybe you havn't played enough hands.

Re: Break Even
A point system for hand evaluation might be a good way to start out,but it's just too mechanical & inflexible imo.Maybe I'm wrong, but I think you should wean yourself off of this asap. Good luck. Ben

Re: Break Even
If you're following that system, you shouldn't have any major holes preflop. Not enough to totally kill your winrate, anyway. I'd spend more time going over hand histories. Of course it's very possible that it's just the way the cards have fallen. 2700 isn't that many.

I've played 2700 hands [/ QUOTE ] Nrags - Do you mean you've been dealt a total of 2700 hands, some of which you've folded before the flop, or do you mean you've been dealt many more hands (maybe ~20,000) but have only played 2700 of them? Buzz |

Re: Break Even
PlayNrags - (What a misnomer!) Hard to say why you’re not doing better. Could be that by playing Hutchison’s system you have been playing optimally but have simply had a run of bad luck. Or maybe the games in which you’re playing are too tight or populated with too many better Omaha-8 players than you - or simply populated with too many Omaha-8 players who are tough for you to beat.
All in all, I think Hutchison has done an excellent job in quantifying hands that simulate well enough to see the flop, especially for a beginner. I think Hutchison’s system identifies playable low only hands very well and also identifies playable hands with two low cards plus two high cards very well. He has only about 2556 hands in his high-only group (all four cards ten or better and also satisfying one of his three conditions for these hands). 2556/270725 amounts to less than one per cent of the total hands dealt to you. I have no problem with his three conditions for these high-only hands. But there are some other high-only hands that I think are also playable, mainly some (but certainly not all) hands which include nines and even some hands that include cards lower than nines. For example, I’d generally see the flop for what I thought would be one small bet with 99TT-double-suited or 88KK-double-suited. In addition, mainly for table image reasons, I generally see the flop with a bit less from the button. The casino where I mostly play, has a single blind for Omaha-8 games with the jackpot collection on the button. Playing with the single blind makes limps from the button safer than with a double blind, and I also get a slight discount for limping from the button. Plus there generally are many loose players who see the flop and also many chasers who continue after the flop when they should fold, and who also continue after the turn when they should fold. Plus it’s more interesting to play a hand than to fold it. But that’s me in my games and not necessarily for you. Perhaps that’s a poor approach for me but I want to be perceived as playing loosely enough to warrant action when I do enter a hand. At any rate, keep us posted on your progress. Buzz |
