The New Toughness Training for Sports by James Loehr
I haven't read this in several years, and never considered its relevance to poker, but it may be just the book he's looking for. Another book that might help is Mastery by George Leonard. I don't know if it is still in print, however. |

The Analects of Confucius
Choose the recent (1997) translation by Simon Leys. It has an excellent introduction and extensive notes that add much to understanding and appreciation of the text. Meditations By Marcus Aurelius In my opinion, these two books are worth more than all the poker books every written. And are much better to boot. -Zeno |

Re: Books that help you stay mentally strong at poker
"Mastery" by Aikido master George Leonard is a brilliant book. The most memorable part of that book for me was when he recounted how judo founder and 10th degree black belt Jigaro Kano told his students while he was on his deathbed to bury him in his white belt. Kano's point was that the true master of anything is the one who has a "beginner's mind" - open minded, curious and child-like, and humble.
Among other things, The New Toughness Training for Sports teaches how to be emotionally resilient - that is, having the ability to bounce back from adversity (personal screw ups and bad luck) in seconds. Very relevant to poker. |

I can only recommend books on what I've experienced of them. I think they will take you where you want to go.

Without having read all of the other replies, a good book is "The Psychology of Poker" by Alan Schoonmaker.
