extracting with a set
10+1. Is there a sensible river bet I can make that gets called? I don't have a read on this guy, but my feeling is he wasn't going to bet if checked to on the river.

Re: extracting with a set
You could try checking or betting the ol' tiny amount on the river. But I don't think you did anything wrong here.

Re: extracting with a set
You won $500 on this hand which is fine. You can't bust someone or double every time you hit a set. Looks like he has something like AK or a smaller PP. Either way he is usually not going to bet if you check. Your only hope is if he is so fishy that he will call a bet on the river. You did what you could which was fine.

Re: extracting with a set
IMO, you overdid it on the turn. He's got a Q/T9/slowplayed overpair/something to be staying in after that raise, so get the chips in now.

Re: extracting with a set
"meh" <- just learned what that meant. i'm SO excited! personally, i'm a fan of the 'repeat the turn bet' when it is apparent villian hasn't done any catching up. the continued escalation bet results too often in fold from a under-pair/middle-pair fishy. when they have convinced themselves that calling the turn bet was correct, i find them using that same justification when i bet the same amount on the river. will even see Ace-high guys call these modest river bets, when i slow down. |

Re: extracting with a set
Lead flop check/raise turn. Or lead flop lead turn check/raise river.

Re: extracting with a set
i would open-raise from the CO.
after that, i think you played it fine. i agree with adanthar that you should've bet ~325 on the turn. you want to make sure you get as many chips in as possible against QJ before an A comes and spoils your action. the river bet's good. i wonder what he had. |

i would open-raise from the CO. [/ QUOTE ] With a shallower stack, so would I. But I've got something like 90 BBs here, so taking down the blinds isn't incredibly desirable. I'd rather encourage a multi-way pot and gamble for the set at this point than try and play an iffy hand heads-up, I think it'll be more profitable on average. |

But I've got something like 90 BBs here [/ QUOTE ] yes and no. your effective stack for the hand is only the ~45 that the people left that act have. how high a PP are you limping here? |

yes and no. your effective stack for the hand is only the ~45 that the people left that act have. [/ QUOTE ] While this is an interesting point, I still think that my implied odds with a set are going to be good enough to make it a more worthwhile endeavor than trying to take down the blinds or play a somewhat difficult small postflop pot. [ QUOTE ] how high a PP are you limping here? [/ QUOTE ] 88 and 99 I probably limp and TT I'll usually raise. Sometimes I'll raise with smaller ones, too, but in this instance I didn't. |
