I read about half the advice (man it's long) and I don't know what you do for a living (or will do)...but I can play this hand blind and give you a life of advice.

Take the job. If you can make that kind of cake as a starting income you'll be over 6 figures in 5 years easy. Then take everything you know from whatever it is you do...hook up with the smartest guy at that company and go start your own company doing the same. That's a gamble but that's one that will really pay off. You don't think any pro would love to start his own company and make money legit? Really? Then look at their books and websites. That should tell you everything you need to know. Work for yourself after they teach you everything. No brainer.

The world is full of "business consultants" who "started their own company." Other people know them as the "unemployed."

I'm not sure anyone has said this already, but you also get the satisfaction of knowing that you're working and contributing to the US GDP.

I love poker (as much as I love making money from it) but it's just not something that you can call a profession, especially if you have a choice as great as yours. I'm genuinely jealous.

D'ja ever play backgammon? In that game, if you're ahead, you want to make the game go smoothly as you quickly get to the objective of winning. No obstacles. Play backgammon here.

Kid, you're way ahead with that Ivy-league degree. I assume you knew that would be so when you enrolled or you could have gone to Youngstown State etc for lots less, and found it lots easier.

It's very '60's to say "Go for it, Maaaan!" But don't be silly. There's more to life than "fun." You can guarantee your life with this job. Poker will leave a lot of questions. Take the job.

It';s distressing that you even have to ask.

Just my $.02 worth...

The thing is, the reason I had to ask is because I am truly approaching my life as a contextual blank slate. I wasn't even aware of half the things you guys have been talking about. My parents have a grade school education and have been more or less 'hustlers' in their lives. My dad went from job to job until starting some businesses in his mid 20s, and since then he's been in sales. He was a manager for like 18 years but left that to go back into direct sales because it was more profitable. Sales is a hustle, just like poker; it's actually 90/10 instead of the 80/20 rule. You get out of it exactly as much as you put into it. So that is the paradigm I have been living under. I don't have a college-educated dad with a great corporate job who I can model my career after (or even the pressure from him to do this), so I am truly a blank slate in terms of what directions I can/will take.

That's why the opinions in this thread are so valuable to me- because these things WEREN'T clear to me. So thanks.

Boy, does that sound bleak.

Oddly enough I've never taken one iota of satisfaction because I'm contributing to the GDP. Never really thought about it either. But now that I have...Nope, no satisfaction.

I would MUCH rather not contribute a red cent to this country. I'll take what I can from it but I'm sure as hell not giving anything back.
