critique my play on this 5/10 live hand with HUGE pot

The other day I was playing 5/10 live at my casino. The game is your typical mix of decent/not so decent players.

about 2 people call from early position. MP2 raises. I'm in the CO with 8 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]9 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] Up until this point I haven't been catching too many playable hands so I didn't want to fold. I figured enough people would be in the pot to justify the call, so that's what I did(I was also tilting ever so slightly at this point). Anyway, The blinds call and all the limpers call. 5-6 people to the flop for 10-12 SBs.

Flop is Q [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]J [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]7 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]. Checked to the OR(original raiser) who bets, I raise. I raised b/c for whatever reason I thought I had an OESD and wanted to try for a free card on the turn if a blank hit since I had inhereted the button. But after I realized my blunder I still thought it was decent b/c I was able to protect my hand. Any A [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]X [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] would be correct to call one bet on that flop anyway. (correct me if I'm wrong here) a few people fold and everone else calls. 4 to the turn with about a 10-11 BB pot.

Turn is the J [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] Now the first person to act checks, and the second person to act bets out. the OR calls, I call, and the first person calls.

The river is a [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (I forgot which one) first person checks, second person bets, OR calls, I raise, first person folds, better calls, OR folds. MHIG as the other guy had something like JT for trips.

I appreciate all comments on my play on this hand. Was it correct to raise the flop with a gutshot draw and a back door flush draw? in this case it was, b/c as I was dragging in the pot this other guy says to me "nice raise! I would have had the A high flush" meaning he would have called a single bet on the flop.

What exactly are you "protecting" with your raise? 9-high?

I'm trying to protect my flush draw. The pot was big on the flop and I didn't want someone with two bigger clubs to call.

Again, this was not my intention to raise(I thought I had an OESD) but I dont neccessarily think it's a bad play. If you think differently, please explain why.

That's definitely one of the traps of live play if you're used to multitabling. I fold that pre-flop.

True, I don't have a flush draw just yet. But wouldn't it be correct for any A [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]X [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] to call one bet on the flop due to the size of the pot? I would think a raise might change their mind.

Take two more clubs out of the deck and see how often you will hit your flush, then tell me if investing two bets in this pot on the flop for the purpose of getting out another flush draw was worth it.

FWIW, Ax of clubs cannot call on this flop. Your hand is better and is marginally callable, maybe, perhaps.

you dont gain much expectation from this...because you need two fairly longshot events to take place... 1) there has to be someone with better clubs 2) they have to come.

I'll agree with you about the hand being maringal. Normally I would fold that hand to a raise but like I said I was on the verge of tilting so I called. The potential flush draw never even crossed my mind when I raised. I just began thinking about it after being told that my raise caused the guy who would have had the nut flush to fold indicating that he would have called one bet on this flop.

I suppose I got lucky
