My favorite is "Gyro":

ji-ro
or
eur-o

Most Americans say "ji-ro" but the correct pronuciation is "eur-o". Go to any mediteranian country where gyros are eaten everywhere and ask for a "ji-ro" and they're gonna have no idea what you're talking about.

I'm the only one so far who pronounces the H in Herb?

Maybe it's a British thing.

That's because only pure idiots say "ji-ro".

I sometimes get a kick out of pronouncing fajitas with the hard j so as to sound somewhat like a female body part. Waitresses appreciate it.

On the herb one, the h is definitely there. I don't have the lingo to make this academic, but the h isn't totally silent, it just isn't heavily aspirated or something, but it does have an effect on how you pronounce the word.

To clarify...

A-Pathetic = A (as in saying the letter A) and Pathetic
Ah-Pathetic = Ah (as in say ah by the doctor) and Pathetic

Reason I ask is a word like ASEPTIC is never (at least by me) pronounced Ah-Septic, but always A-Septic.

i understand the difference now but still don't pronounce it either way.

A-(as in the letter A)pathetic is...well, pathetic.

but i also don't say Ah-(like the doctor)pathetic.

i say it like i pronounce the A in apple.
