Right is really only up to you to decide.

From a pure EV/earn standpoint, it was unwise. As it's been said, you're basically paying this guy to stay at your table.

From another POV, it could be long term positive. Maybe this guy would have busted out and never come back, but now he's a repeat customer AND he won't mind sitting with you in the future (whereas if you squeeze every chip from him, he decides you're too good to play with).

Of course the table thought it was a good idea, that's more money for them to win from an easier mark thaan you.

Since you only called from the flop on, you only won $20 of his money, and gave it back. You could have gotten (probably) the other $30 of his stack. You won $200 for the hand. In the grand scheme of things, this is no big deal. It happens so rarely, you're not costing yourself all that much in the long run.

Don't sweat it.

NO!
Here is why...
He probably would have gone to the ATM and re-seeded the game. If not someone else with money would have taken his seat. If you start choping pots only the house wins.

One time I saw a player go broke. He reached in his pocket to rebuy but was $20 short the required buy in. The player who busted him pulled $20 from his wallet (couldn't take it from the table) and gave him a "loan".
For the next two hours the borrower went on a run of cards and won almost every pot. The lender had second best and suffered more beats than you can imagine. After mulitple rebuys and on tilt he left the table broke without getting repaid his $20.

Okay folks, thanks for the feedback. Pretty much as I expected, and confirmed my second-guessing myself. Dannimal's comments reflect what I was thinking, though.

I'll try to repeat what's been said here...

I definitely understand your attitude and alot of ignorant players can lose an excessive amount of money, even @ 4/8, and you feel bad.
I'd be more likely to check to a nice guy who's down on his luck rather than a 'lousy player' who is, but regardless, sometimes its reasonable to make a few bucks less from some guy who can't afford it.

In this situation though, you thoroughly warned him, and you may have made a lot more money if he was agressive. I would bet and then give your warning instead of check and give your warning.

and don't call with the nuts. as a general rule, raise with the nuts.

The only question I have is, did you have to have a showdown to get the jackpot? If that is so, is it worth going easy on him to keep him from folding at some point?

One of the casinos I play in regularly has a similar big hand payout, but the river card must be dealt to qualify. So in instances like this, playing slow is crucial to make sure everyone doesn't fold before the river is dealt. If that was the case here, then you did fine in the way you played it up to the river ( making sure he doesn't fold too soon ).

As far as splitting your winnings goes, I've been known to go easy on fish at times, but I don't think I'd ever split any winnings with them. You went as easy on him as you could. Take your money.

This may have been nice of you, but giving someone money at a casino is never a good idea IMO. Now if you wanted to do something for your image buying a round for the table after you hit the jackpot/better use of the money.

Don't split the pot with him, that's just dumb. If you want to give him anything, just give him his last bet back. Or, like a previous poster mentioned, buy a round for the table.
