My laptop did not come with microsoft office and im not looking to shell out a bunch of cash for it. I was wondering if anyone uses the free openoffice.org and wonder how you feel about it?
Are there any potential problems? Thanks rJ |

You're better off with it. They won't play games changing file formats on you, making things incompatible every couple of years.
The price is just the beginning. |

Re: anyone have exerience with openoffice.org
CraigR. It is for linux, but my understanding is you can run it for regular XP if you dont already have office. If im wrong and somebody knows it, please let me know.
NeilStevens. I cant tell if you are saying openoffice is good or bad. rJ |

Re: anyone have exerience with openoffice.org
I have it and while I have never had any serious problems, it's not quite as comfortable as MS office, and it's missing some features. If you're constantly working in Excel and need to be able to use all the widgets, you may have occasional difficulties. But if you just want to be able to read and write office files, you'll be fine.

Re: anyone have exerience with openoffice.org
I'm saying OpenOffice is much better than anything Microsoft ships.
By the way, OpenOffice is not tied to just one OS. MS Windows versions exist and should be available for download. |

Re: anyone have exerience with openoffice.org
the office 2003 suite absolutely destroys openoffice in terms of features. i find it laughable that this would even be challenged. i would be surprised if you could find an OO developer that would make that claim. cheaper? certainly. that makes it very attractive for a lot of people who do simple office wore. more secure? presently unknown. better or more featured? no way.

Re: anyone have exerience with openoffice.org
I was just asking. I've used OO version of excel and word and I didn't run into any problems. But I'm a pretty light user of word. I just write papers, thats it. When I use excel I type in all of my formulas and skip the wizards. So if I'm blind maybe that's why.

Re: anyone have exerience with openoffice.org
Because of secret, proprietary, undocumented, lock-in file formats, Microsoft software is worthless for people who value their data in the long term. Whizz-bang features are meaningless compared with data integrity. Therefore, Microsoft loses by default.
