Expanding my gambling library
I'm working to expand (complete?) my gambling library, and I'm looking for recommendations. Below is a list of my currently owned literature:
The Biggest Game in Town by A. Alvarez The Psychology of Poker by Alan N. Schoonmaker Amarillo Slim in a World Full of Fat People by Amarillo Slim Poker Nation by Andy Bellin The Smarter Bet Guide to Poker by Basil Nestor Official Rules of Card Games by Bicycle Pot-limit and No-limit Hold'em by Bob Ciaffone and Stewart Reuben Statistics by Cliffs QuickReview The Professional Poker Dealer's Handbook by Dan Paymar , Donna Harris and Mason Malmuth Tournament Poker for Advanced Players by David Sklansky The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky Hold'em Poker for Advanced Players - 21st Century Edition by David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth Hold'em Poker by David Sklansky Small Stakes Hold'em by David Sklansky , Mason Malmuth and Ed Miller Poker, Gaming and Life by David Sklansky How to Make $100,000 a Year Gambling for a Living by David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth Super System by Doyle Brunson Rounders the DVD The Basics of Winning Blackjack by J. Edward Allen The Basics of Winning Video Poker by J. Edward Allen Positively Fifth Street by James McManus Inside the Poker Mind by John Feeney, PhD Scarne's Guide to Modern Poker by John Scarne Killer Poker Hold'em Handbook by John Vorhaus Rounders - the novel by Kevin Canty Zen and the Art of Poker by Larry W. Philips Winning Low Limit Hold'em by Lee Jones Fundamentals of "21" by Mason Malmuth and Lynn Loomis Gambling Theory and Other Topics by Mason Malmuth Poker Essays - Volume I by Mason Malmuth Poker Essays - Volume II by Mason Malmuth Poker Essays - Volume III by Mason Malmuth Caro's Book of Poker Tells by Mike Caro Caro's Pro Poker Tells - Video by Mike Caro Caro's Fundamental Secrets of Winning Poker by Mike Caro Thursday Night Poker by Peter O' Steiner Play Poker Like the Pros by Phil Hellmuth, Jr. Art of War by Sun Tzu The Cincinnati Kid a Video Here is what I'm planning to buy within the next few months: Getting the Best of It by David Sklansky Internet Texas Hold'em: Winning Strategies from an Internet Pro by Matthew Hilger Caro on Gambling by Mike Caro Big Deal by Anthony Holden Seven-Card Stud for Advanced Players by David Sklansky , Mason Malmuth and Ray Zee Sklansky on Poker by David Sklansky I'd like comments on the books I'm planning to acquire, and also advice on any literature I don't have listed that I really should have on hand. I've read a lot of the literature recommendations that Malmuth gives in some of his books, but the lists appear possibly outdated. I'm not much of a tournament player (my assessment is that they're pretty much for suckers) but any good strategy books that happen to focus on tourneys yet contain good theory principles (such as Tournament Poker for Advanced Players) would be helpful. Also, after having read Malmuths 3-volume Poker Essays collection, I've become very interested in mastering stud. I'm a fairly aware stud player, but probably break-even to small loser in real stud. (Little stud I'm no worried about. I'm only planning to by the one book right now, and I'm guessing there's more that I need to pick up. Recommendations would be appreciated. |

Re: Expanding my gambling library
Your library and to-be-acquired list is fine. You might consider:
HOH1 HOH2 GSIH Weighing the Odds Improve Your Poker Middle Limit Holdem Omaha Holdem Poker "How Good is Your" series (PLO, PLHE, LHE) WLLH 3rd Edition SSII Real Poker - Play of Hands Holdems Odd Book Poker, Sex & Dying And if you want: Championship NL & PL Holdem Championship Satellites Championship Practice Hands New Players Guide to NL Holdem For DVDs, stay away from Hellmuth. Lederer's DVDs are good to very good. I enjoyed the Poker Superstars Invitational series. Also the 2004 World Poker Conference DVD has a couple of good presentations. I just got Phil Gordon's and haven't watched it. Caro's is OK. Haven't seen Sklansky's. As far as 7CS, be sure and read Chip Reece in SSI. You might also get Epstein's book called Greatest Book of Poker for Winners. Roy West's book has been likened to WLLH for stud. |

Re: Expanding my gambling library
Thanks. I actually don't know what those abbreviations stand for, except for the Winning Low Limit Hold'em v3, which I believe is by Lee Jones. I own the second edition, but I saw v3 in the bookstore a few weeks ago. Does it really shed any new insight that SSHE doesn't cover? Also, if you could de-abbreviate those book titles, I'd appreciate it.

Re: Expanding my gambling library
HOH1 = Harrington on Holdem Vol I
HOH2 = Vol 2 GSIH = Getting Started in Holdem How Good is Your Pot Limit Omaha How Good is Your Pot Limit Holdem How Good is Your Limit Holdem SSII = Super System Vol 2 IMO, WLLH3 is better postflop than WLLH2, but WLLH2 is a little looser preflop |

I think your library is big enough. You should stop reading books and start thinking for yourself, you stinkin' donkey.

Re: Expanding my gambling library
For entertainment purposes, "The Professor, the Banker and the Suicide King" (about the big game in Vegas with Andy Beal and Doyle's crew) is excellent. As is the new book "One of a Kind" about Stuey Ungar.
Both would make fine additions to your library. |

But "One of a Kind" just blew me away - really amazing story and great writing. As literature, I think it's the best poker-related book out there. |

Re: Expanding my gambling library
Someone recently made this comment in another forum:
"7 Card Stud for Advanced Players is, in my opinion, the worst book I've ever seen in print from 2+2. That's not to say it isn't useful; it does have plenty of good stuff in it, and it really is very thorough. The problem is how it's put together. The flow is extremely chaotic, and almost seems to meander about in Ray Zee's stream of consciousness most of the time. It's not that he doesn't know what he's talking about; it's just a poorly executed book overall. That said, if you're willing to reread it a couple of times, there's plenty of good stud tips in there. I dunno. I'm not saying you shouldn't buy it, because it will improve your stud game if you take the time to digest it. It's just much more difficult to digest than any other poker book I've ever read." Thoughts? |
