Default AQo, all high cards on board

Preflop: Hero is Button with Q[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. SB posts a blind of $1.
1 fold, MP raises to $6, CO calls $6, Hero calls $6, 2 folds.

Flop: ($21) K[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], A[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img], J[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (3 players)

CO checks, Hero checks.

River: ($51) A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 players)
CO bets $55,

Preflop raiser could have nearly anything. Main opponent was completely unknown. Is there any other way to play this? Do I call here? That big of a bet isn't a bluff very often in this game, in my experience. What could he be betting that I beat? AT?

Don't think you can really call here. It is almost definitely AK here which was smooth called preflop. It's certainly not aces, unlikely to be kings since I am assuming he would have re-raised preflop, could be jacks but he probably would have raised the flop since jacks is vulnerable to AK on that board. What could you beat? Only a dead bluff, basically. Maybe something like small pocket pair and he thinks you are weak/tight?

This is 6 max, so dont define Villain's range of hands so narrowly, unless he's a rock.

His slight overbet on the river is crafty. I'm not sure what to do here, but you enticed the "bluff" by checking the turn, so... Call?

It's possible he's betting a weaker ace for value as well, so you CAN beat more than just a bluff on the river.

EDIT: Just saw that Soah was NOT PFR, which definately narrows Villain's hand range a bit more, making it less likely he's betting a weaker hand. What hands was Villain raising? If he was anything remotely tight, you're losing to a bunch more hands. I dont think folding is so bad.

His line, if he had a powerful hand, was interesting. Check-call, check, bet out. If this player loves to slowplay easy fold...

I would love it if you called just so I can see results, but the more I think about it, the more I lean towards folding.

As I mentioned initially, this player was completely unknown to me.

I really don't like the flop and want to get to showdown as cheap as possible; I elected to check the turn and call the river. Other option is to bet the turn and check the river. Maybe that line would have been better. But there are just soooo many hands that beat AQ on the turn, I got scared. I have outs against everything, so I don't want to get raised. I've improved on the river, but only enough to beat KJ. I'll win sometimes here against a worse ace, but in the long run I'm thinking that a call there is -EV. It just seems so weak though; I want to make sure others agree.....

Edit: hadn't yet seen the last post before this one before I began writing which mentioned betting the turn

I'd probably bet the turn and fold to anymore strength so you don't have to put yourself in a sticky situation (i.e. if he bets out on the river *ahem*)

He could be betting a weaker ace eyeing it as a value bet, or he could be bluffing. As it is, I think you have to fold. Most people lead out with a weaker ace on that flop, and I can't see him having any viable holding that would need to bluff. He could have missed his c/r on the turn and that's something you have to seriously consider.

I didn't like the big bet at all, but I made the hasty decision that I had too much to fold, and I get shown Q [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] T [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img].

Not to mention the flopped nut straight.

Sorry if your at the end of your post indicated sarcasm. It's early and my meters not up and running yet.
